Both. But it really depends on the character creator, voice actors and LIs.
I just know that I'm going human for sure.

My second playthrough in DA:O was a human female ONLY in order to shack up with Alistair in the royal palace at the end of the game haha

Depends on many things.
The weather, the mood, the food, the theme, the schemes, etc.

I usually roleplay myself on my first playthrough, so a human female warrior- hopefully of the duel-wielding variety, if possible!
I only go male after I've exhausted all my female playthroughs of all classes, so it may be a while this time...

Male role-playing as males. No excuses, I just really like dudes.
EDIT: Though, I wouldn't say no to a Cassandra/Vivienne romance, if said to are LIs

I always play as a female I have no idea how Bioware got the stats before but I'm sure if we had a proper vote now with out influences it be more than just 18% of people playing the femal in a certain game

well, don't quote me on this, but i think the 18% is more for ME series. And DA is more like 33%.
saw that posted somewhere once......
as for myself, i'll play a few females first, then prolly a guy or two. i'm gonna be replaying this quite a bit anyway i think. lol!

I've tried playing male characters, but they seem kinda...meh, in comparison to the ladies. I'll be a female again, probably another red haired/drk blue eyed one.

Male although I definitely will create both male and female characters (as I do in every game featuring cc)

I'll be playing as a female Inquisitor.

When I first started playing Bioware games, ( all the Baldur's Gate series),I always played male because I didn't realize I could play females. :-( In DA series I played only female, and will do the same for DAI.

Big chances are I usually exhaust most of my female playthroughs, but I always figure out a couple of male characters as well.
It really depends on the character creation, the story and the romances. (For example, I have only 6-8ish characters for ME, but I have about... uh... gosh I don't know 10-15 characters for DA:O, BUUUTTT, I'll have only like 6ish characters for DA2 because of lack of races and such.)

Both, eventually. I think in DA2 I played female Hawke through more, something about the voicing just really fit with the character. Overall, I'll play whichever I feel like at the time. The differences between the two tend to make it somewhat worth it, though I often wish there were more difference so progressive play throughs by different gender selections would find more unique experiences you couldn't find in the other.
I'm thinking since I enjoyed Female Hawke so much I'll probably start with a male this time, and then try out the female in another play through, but nothing is set in stone. In the end, I'll do whatever I feel like at the time.

It comes down to the romance options for me, to be honest. In a game where I have access to m/m romance, I almost exclusively play as male characters. I've never played a female in Jade Empire, DA2, or ME3. In games where I don't, I will mix it up with males and females. I'm split 50/50 in BG, BG2, KOTOR, KOTOR 2, ME, and ME2.
The one exception for me was DA: O. I just dislike Zevran so much and given that he's my only option, it plays out more like the former with about 50/50 male/female.
Since I suspect that DA: I will be more like the second category, I will start with a male (dwarf) for my first playthrough. If there isn't a m/m option that I like, I'll go with females or males on a whim afterwards.
I'll probably also do at least one lady dwarf playthrough because they are awesome gals.

I was thinking Female Mage Qunari, but if voice acting is bad I might not lol. Or if Female Qunari look like what Female Barbarians look like on Diablo 3
