I want to say it's because BSNers are progressive people. I want to say that many BSNers reject stereotypes and are open to women being badasses and heroes too. I want to say that at the very least they think like me, that it's just a video game, and it's just a personal tradition based on aesthetic choice and nothing more.

Instead, I keep getting a suspicion that the real reason is lesbians.

Thats part of the reason. The main reason though is because I think female protagonists are cooler than male ones.

Inquisitor Adrastia of the Ordo Hereticus.  A division of the Inquisition dedicated to hunting of heretics, cultists, mutants, and unsanctioned psykers(basically apostate mages).

She is a Sanctioned Psyker(A Mage), and a playable character in the RTS Dawn of War: Retribution.

 On my first playthrough, most likely a female. If I decide to do a second run, I'll make a male character.

So far (KOTOR, Jade Empire, ME, DAO, ME2, DA2, ME3) I have always used a female character in my first playthrough of a Bioware game.
No guarantee that this will continue as I have sometimes chosen a male in other games (KOTOR2, Fable 2)

Blond Human Female Ice/Earth Mage as in DAO and DA2, maybe I will throw some blood magic ''only controlling spells'' in there.

Female. I will do at least one male playthrough though- I just hope I like the male VA. I find playing a male Hawke to be less interesting because I don't like the male VA as much as the female. And mShep is just painful to play- at least for me.

Female first time around

It's actually weird.... my Wardens have all been female, and I can't see my Hawkes as anything but male.... must stem back from my KOTOR days
