I'll look back on this game in a few years, sometime after the servers have been shut down and think to myself what a waste of time it was. All that imaginary equipment, gear, weapons and characters... just gone. Poof! I could have done something more constructive with my time than grind through 200 waves with a bunch of characters and promote them 60 times, just so I could get some silly little banner to show off to strangers.

You're unbelievable ignorant if you think 130 hours is a lot of time sunk into a game.

That might be one play through of Skyrim, might.

U can finish the skyrim storyline in under 6h's(main plot) , u cant even come near to 100% completion with only 130h, that being said I understand the OP to an extent, I have mates that still to this day spend all aftrenoon on BF2, I never understood them, but hey if u enjoy something, knock urself out :)

Don't start calling me a hater just yet.  I love this game and as a matter of fact, I've called this my favourite multiplayer game of all time.  I no longer feel this way but this game is great nonetheless.  I consider myself to have sunk A LOT of time into this game.  My play time in this game is nearly tripple that of any other game I've ever played.  Call of duty Mordern Warfare 2 was a former leader with 48 hours.  My playtime on ME3 MP is something like 130 hours.  That is a hell of a lot of time spent playing this game.  Now when I look at other people's manifests and read posts on this forum its not uncommon to find people that have 500+ hours of game play.  I've even seen people with 1000-1500 hours spent playing this game.  Something isn't right about that.  To me it seems extremely excessive, obsessive even.  So it seems to me that Bioware through what ever means has created a small following of players that spend to much time playing this game in my opinion.  I would think that this is bad for business and for the Mass Effect community.  What do you guys think of this?

Please don't close this thread.  I'm really trying to get people's opinions on this.
The purpose of this topic is not to elicit a reaction.  I'm simply trying to have a conversation with this game's community.

i'm close to the 1k mark. probably won't get there but anyway lest say i'm at 1k? its been out a year so 19.23 hours a week which is about 2.75 hours a day on average. which isn't that much when you think about it.

I work 40-50 hours a week, have an 80+ title game collection (counting arcade titles), and have managed to put 360+ hours into ME3, only ~100 hours of which are single player.  I don't mind not having a full manifest because my personal belief is that the real thrill is in the chase.

I've 100%'d Red Dead Redemption, have gotten all guns gold in multiplayer, and have literally done all that there is to do in RDR.  It's an incredibly deep game.  I don't play it anymore.  Know why?  The thrill is in the chase.

I have Red Dead Redemption as well as the Undead Nightmare.  I only got to the part where to ride that woman into town and you repay her for saving you.  I don't find that game very engaging.

I have at least 300+ hours spent in every Bioware RPG since KOTOR.

I've easily spent 2000+ hours in the Mass Effect trilogy. Don't get me started on how much I played Counter Strike Source and eventually Call of Duty.

1000 hours in. It hurts my schoolwork and relationships. I need to max the manifest so I can throw my xbox out the window.

But maxing your manifest isn't that important :(

I have 500 hours. Granted, I'd be better off if I'd done something productive with that time, but eh, if I wasn't going to anyway, whatever. Gamers don't put more time into games than most Americans put in to TV. It's no different than any other hobby. If in a year I'd put 500 hours into knitting or baseball cards, or ships in bottles or hiking it wouldn't be any different.

On edit: Wait, what, someone is arguing that having obsessed customers is bad for business?  These are the games envangelists, they make sure there are enough people playing for the newbs, they carry the newbs (urrrrghhhh), and many even occasionally drop money on the game.  No, having a core of dedicated customers is not bad for ME3 MP.

130 hours is nothing. You're still quite the newb.

I like to play my games effciently.  I also don't know how you can call someone that has put 130 hours into a game a newb.  Put 130 hours into perspective.  That is nearly five and a half days spent in game.

There are 65 characters in MP.  That means you've spent 2 hours per character.  That's not enough time to even test loadouts, let alone use each character's powers effectively.

"Efficiency" in this case means you've only learned the basics.  If that's good enough for you, then move on.  Find something else more fun.

Bahahahahah!! 130 hours? A lot? U r kidding me lol...

I alone have 1000+ hours and just play cause I love mass effect. Simple as that. Everything about it is great. The story, the characters, the lore... It's a modern day Star Wars (for those who were just too young to understand episodes 4-6).

I don't care if u think its unhealthy. Haha

You can beat Skyrim's main storyline in about an hour and a half.

Almost 1200 hours in. Not playing to max my manifest or to complete challenges (though I've done both). I've met some awesome people and still enjoy playing the game with them, simple as that. Don't have any problems in my life. Work, studies, friends.. all good.

But now that I think about it.. I haven't watched tv or read any books in a while.

I personally have about 700ish hours sunk into just MP, I have a full time job, a wife that I spend tons of my time with & other real life responsibilities.

If you were able to clock the time spent on any hobby that any devoted person of that hobby, I'd hazard a guess of it being quite a few times more then 700 hours. In fact it's going to reach into the thousands of hours of not tens of thousands of hours or even more.

I personally don't see it being different then say working on cars or motorcycles or putting together model trains, drawing or painting etc.

700 hours is right around a month solid of playing over the course of a year. To put things in perspective. I remeber my old WoW account on just my main I had almost 300 DAYS clocked in that's 7200 hours in just over 4 years and I had more then one character. And I didn't play all that heavily after the 1st 2 years even had month or longer breaks.

Gaming is a hobby and any hobby is going to consume a lot of time.
Bottom line is it's not hard to rack up a lot of time spent doing anything you enjoy.

I might think I had a lot of time in this game...until I realize it's the only game I play and it's been out for over a year now.

I have over 500 hours in ME3 MP, but I own a treasure chest full of games, literally! Plus another pile I have under my tv stand.

Alot of games I only play single player, sometimes unlocking everything, and I am done, others I'll play for several weeks If I'm hooked.

The only games I played alot was MW2, Forza 2, Gears 2-3, And ME3 MP for longest playtime in my game collection.

If you really like a game you will keep playing it no matter how old it is.

Edit: I forgot to add that I have a 9-5 job so 500 hours in ME3 MP is accumulated over a year and between other games I have played.

i stopped playing ME3 MP since i got Tomb Raider on PS3....

PS3 BF3: 272 Hours 49 Minutes.
yes, i play alot on PS3 than on Xbox, because it depends on which game i own on either one of the game systems that i own.

I'm on about 320hrs and am starting to think that that is long enough playing the same game. There comes a point where I feel I'm playing out of habit to fill some time rather than because I am enjoying it. Personally there are more productive things I could be doing with my time and so I doubt I'll start playing again.

There are games that require hundreds of hours to even be able to play them with some form of efficiency. CoD:MW2 is a simple to pick up, simple to play game that wouldn't take much skill to begin, and doesn't take much skill to play effectively. ME3 also doesn't take tremendous skill to start, but has a decently high skill ceiling. A Player with 100 hours could easily play gold, or platinum. However, there are games like Tribes or DoTA where the skill ceiling is so high that hundreds of hours could be sunk into the game and you still would not be very efficient.
