I forgot how much I loved the feel of Mass Effect 1 after playing 2 and 3 non-stop for the last few months, the music, the look, the feel... it's a bit raw and unpolished but is clearly a labour of love. But damn, I forgot how big the Citadel areas are in the first game and the massive wait between Eden Prime and the next combat assuming you take the time to explore the Citadel.
What I really missed most now that I am playing the first again are the RPG elements in that you have complete control over your gear and ammo and the (imo) better, more detailed skill upgrade system. The combat is much more tactical and less twitch, it's a nice change of pace compared to the frantic fights of ME3.
Just having fun with this gem, I encourage others to go back to the beginning if they haven't done so in a while, it's a blast. It just has me wishing that they could have carried over the skill system into the other games, rather than simplify them as they did. It's a 360 original that feels more like a PC game than console.
Loaded up ME1 for the first time in 4 years

I would pay for a new Mass Effect game using a graphically enhanced version of the original engine, with all skills and quirks intact. Another thing I noticed is that Turians in the first game have some really scary needle sharp teeth, I think they toned those down in the sequels.

So... anyone know why they are still charging for Pinnacle Station? Me thinks a six year old game should have all of it's DLC for free by now.

It truly is the gem of the series, even if unpolished. I could go for a more forgiving autosave system, I have to remember those quicksaves. It's really easy to lose 30 min of progress if you die in a fight.

Because they still make money on it.Jukaga wrote...

Consider the people that purchased (or were gifted) ME Trilogy... for every copy they have a chance to make money on DLC for all three games.

Got my first copy of ME1 on Monday, installed Wednesday, but I want uninterrupted play time for a day or two which won't happen while Mom-in-law is here. Aargh.
Finished the ME1, started right in on ME2. Having played the first in the series (finally) really made a difference in Alchera. Walking around the wreckage meant something this time.
As for Mako, loved the various planets, the landscapes and skies. Didn't care for the steeper mountains or the thresher maws. Speeding happily across a plain, then 'critical failure' because I didn't think about those worms. I do wish Mako had carried over to ME2. ME2's mining method puts me to sleep.

[A bit of a tangent from the main topic] It seems like even though almost everyone loves the first Mass Effect (including me), for some reason they hate the Mako. How could you not love driving the Mako?!? I do! It's like a driving sim, in and of itself. I agree that it's a little underpowered, and really should have had four-wheel steering (the wheels at the corners, more specifically). But overall, I think it was quite a well-designed vehicle for a truly great game.
I've spent many hours just driving around planets even after I knew for a fact I'd already found all the artifacts/minerals/mission elements, just because I love driving the Mako. The more hills, the better - with a few exceptions... Metgos and Nodacrux, most of all, had mountains that were particular pains to climb. But what can I say? I'm a completionist. I love to cover all the ground.
Anyway - I just wanted to say (/write) out loud what I've been quietly thinking after seeing so many other folks who say they love the game but hate the Mako. None in this thread, but elsewhere.

I'm with you - I didn't hate Mako, just some of the planets like you mentioned. The atmosphere and feeling of exploration was wonderful. I just started an ME1 run because I wanted a shep who didn't kill Kaidan and immediately I felt at home! I fell for the feeling, I didn't need the combat to be developed, though I don't mind it in ME2 and 3. The skills system was fine, inventory was fine though cluttered... everything was fine and then they broke it.

Mass Effect 1 is definitely my favourite, I think it just feels like there's more freedom to explore. I quite like the Mako as well, although my current playthrough is the first time I've played on PC, so my opinion on that might change when I get the Mako since theres no 360 controller support!! .... anyway thats for another topic. And regarding Kaiden, I am yet to have a playthrough where he survives, I have intended to save him before but when it comes to it, he's just too annoying!

Mass Effect 1 is the product by which I judge all of the other product in the series against. There is nothing else in the series that I enjoy quite as much. I even enjoy the frustrating parts. As far as I am concerned they still have not made a proper sequel to it. It is the game where I feel I have made the most impacting decisions.

I started with ME2. Enjoyed it so much I ordered ME1 and was hooked on the series. I miss the MAKO and all of the exploration that it added to the side missions. I am going back to the beginning and will play through with the same character..

With CD's mods it really makes the game look and feel even more amazing and sometimes i can really dislike certain thing's with the game i still will always love the first one a lot and i agree with what everyone says on here, it truly will always be a gem.
