I don't usually have it on when I PUG, but I always have it available in case someone else sounds interesting. It's how I met my current favorite group of friends to play with.

When I first say something it tends to be greeted with:
"Are you a boy or a girl?"
"Are you female?"
And my personal favorite: "Are you using a voice modulator?"
I guess I sound like a chipmunk. :?

I plug it in, but only to prevent the Kinect feedback. Usually mute it. But I'll speak if spoken to, or to thank for a dramatic revive, or to remind them to get the hell to the extraction point at 5 seconds to go...

I like to use equipment to distort my voice.

Ran into a guy or girl doing this in a PUG game when I first started playing MP, f*ckin hilarious! I wish more people would try this!

That's the best part. No one I've spoken to has really ever heard my real voice.

That's adorable! I watched a chipmunk get grabbed by an eagle today.

I keep it as an option. I only speak if I have something to say like warning others of a grenade.

Only a goon doesn't use their mic on GOLD/PLAT.  Communication is key (4 guys all rocket the same spot at the same time, nobody warns of that Banshee about to grab the player, no one says "no worries I'm gellin", etc.).  Sooner or later this community is going to shrink, start talking and "friend up" now.

THIS IS ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS PEOPLE HAVE ISSUES WITH PUGS!

It could be worse. They could be asking for other things in addition....

Creepy people. Creepy people everywhere! Not so much this game, but those other PvP FPS games that have player audio atrocities.

I used to be very shy with the mic, as english isn't my first language. With practice I got used to it. Now I use it in PUGs when:
- I need to communicate useful information and I don't feel too lazy
- I want to thank someone for doing something nice, encouraging good behaviour
- Someone starts a nice conversation

Though I wonder if a female voice doesn't drive some people to be extra competitive ("must dominate woman") but it might be my imagination.
PC crowds are mostly silent and when people talk, they tend to be shy. I think I only came upon 2 or 3 annoying persons in more than a thousand PUG games. Even so, I've never been insulted or criticized even when I performed horribly or topped the scoreboard. This community is really different !

I haven't been asked that, except by people who already knew I was female. Now I feel like I've missed out on something.
"How old are you?"
"Two and a half. Are you my mommy?"  :P

@OperatingWookie; that may be the most random reply I have ever gotten to a post. :D

No gotta disagree with you about Gold, don't need a mic to be successful. Better to look at your teams loadout in lobby before you decide to play with em or not. On Plat though I only attempt that with friends, I'm not wasting time or gear Puggin' that one.

This. Gold doesn't require team play, and neither does Platinum if you're REALLY good. I just Volus my way through anything and everything until there's nothing left to kill, team mates be damned.

its rare to see others with a mic, so i just tend to leave it unplugged... if someone else starts talking i might plug it in, but even then its kinda rare.

Always have it on with friends. With PUGs, it's 50/50. Depends on if I'm in the mood to talk.

Only once has someone asked if I was a boy or girl. Most seem able to tell that I am not, in fact, a prepubescent male.

Always. I enjoy making pugs uncomfortable with my sultry bedroom voice. My friend and I team up often to do so.

*rolls eyes*

O.k. there Ramboo.  Makes me wonder why you bother playing with a "team" at all.  Really, you should just solo instead, that's what real Ramboo-boos do.  :P

Nope, GOLD doesn't require a mic or "team play", it just makes sub 19 minute GOLD matches possible even with a PUG group.  Keep doin what yer doin tho.

BTW, luv that private profile, just got the game last week huh?

Got tired of the "OMG LEDGEND UR IRISH!!!!!!"
Then I have to explain to them what it means to be proper irish, not that dublin ****e.
Or Mayo, that's just a plain weird place.

Yeah i do, just incase some one else has a mic. Lots of people on PC dont use their mics, so when you find people that do, it helps with the ongoing collaboration.

I'll talk back in PUGs, but I won't usually initiate.

If I ran a few games with them, I'll thank them for the games before leaving.

In my case, mics for xbl parties only. My friends are usually amused when I play as a krogan since I like to roleplay when I do and have a seemingly convincing krogan voice*.

*which is funny since I have don't have a really deep Vin Diesel baritone-type voice when I normally talk
