I'm trying to play Mass Effect 2 without pausing to use my powers so much, and I'm having difficulties adjusting to hotkeys being assigned to the # keys. It's not clicking in my head that these keys should be used on the fly for powers instead of weapons; I'm conditioned by old school shooters. I quickly adapted to custom hotkeys in Diablo II, where I used F1-4, and the 1st 4 letter keys in each row from the left (i.e. q, w, e r), but I wasn't using the keyboard for movement and squad control.
Here is the set up I was using:
1 - Inferno Ammo
2 - Medigel
3 - Barrier
4 - Charge
5-8: Squad powers
I found myself consistently pressing 3 instead of 4, when I really needed to charge, and dying due to the lengthy cooldown of Barrier; so I switched it for another power, but I still pressed 3 instead of 4 too many times, and I still died, regardless of the skill. I also found it difficult to reach 6-8 while manoeuvring Shepard.
I've watched many videos and observed the hotkeys used by others, some all # keys, and some combining #s and letters; I've also noticed many switch certain powers to certain keys consistently, such as MediGel always on 1. I googled the subject and searched on this forum, but I didn't find any advice at all on assigning hotkeys.
Short of playing over and over and over, and being frustrated to the point of breaking my keyboard until I learn to use the # keys, do you have any recommended keyboard hotkey setups?

I don't think there is any magic keyboard binding that makes the game go easier. Most of the time I had Shep's trademark on 2, another Shep power on 1, Medigel on 3, and then whatever on 4.
Personally, I played ME2 many times through using the Quickslots bound to 1-8. But typically I took squad members that had decent AI so I could simply use the Q and E command to use their appropriate power. There were less powers overall, so if there was a make or break power, it probably was on 4 or 5, which I can easily reach with WASD as my movement keys.
The top slots were assigned to things I might use once or twice, like ammo powers. More recently I stopped assigning ammo powers at all and just use the HUD for that. I also sometimes don't even bother assigning Medigel.
This is all personal preference though, so you should just experiment and use what you like.

There is no magic fit, but suggestions help.
Does anyone switch the hotkeys from numbers to letters?
