Is Bioware trying to alienate their female players?

Well, straightShep at least, that would mean adding 2 more straight options while taking out 2 gay options at the same time, just no, it would mean that gayShep would only have 1 option while straightShep get 8.killdozer9211 wrote...

Well, lets face it, in real life, it's no different.
I do not mean to sound homophobic or anything (I'm not) but it's just a fact that straight people vastly outnumber gay people, and thus there are a ton lot more options for straight people than for gay people. It's just the harsh cold truth.

I'm a female who romanced Kaidan and then Thane, with the understanding that things were unlikely to end well with a man who had a terminal illness. I thought it was handled well (contrary to every other Thane-mancer who feels he should have magically been cured of Kepral's and had a happy ending, etc.).
More options would have been nice, and yes, things sure sucked if you romanced Jacob. They could have handled that somewhat better I'm sure, but again...

Yeah, but the problem is all of male Shepard's romances end up pretty happy. Maybe if it had been equal, and one of his relationships had moved on as well to show that the characters aren't complete satellites around Shepard, it wouldn't have been so frustrating...but of course that didn't happen. Why just make the female romances "realistic"? Did the writers on the ME team think that women like having their characters cheated on for the drama or angst or something?
A straight femshep can get all of these wonderful moments in ME3:
- apologizing to Kaidan for 'cheating'
- Jacob moving on after six months and getting another girl pregnant
- option to practically beg Jacob for sex after he confirms he is with another woman
- option to get shut down by Joker (why did they even need to include this?)
- option to get shut down by Vega (only to creepily harass him in the Citadel dlc if you so desire).
It definitely made me wonder what Bioware was thinking a little bit...

However, it is not real life, it is a video games, not to meantion that gayShep doesn't have any option up until ME3, and they probably wouldn't have added without the constant petitions and requests. If you actually notice, they did exactly what you said and give straightShep 7 options with 2 options only for gayShep, I don't know how much more unequal distribution you want.Heretic_Hanar wrote...

Just can't get behind that stuff, Kepral's being, iirc, a byproduct of being a Drell and not living in a desert. Anywhere Shepard is comfortable ought to make Thane's condition worse.AtreiyaN7 wrote...

how do you mean weird?
is the dialogue consistent or inconsistent? (ie: does he still act like he's just now coming onto you?)
No, he refers to manshep as the person he loved. A couple of Shepard's lines aren't recorded apart from one bit on Mars when he tells Kaidan Cerberus didn't change how he felt about him.
How do you romance in ME1 with maleShep? Do you have to edit the save? Also how are the animations and the dialogue? Sorry about all the questions but if this is possible I may go for a new trilogy run to check it out.

The fact there is so much attention given to romances of all types gives the product more appeal to female fans, not alienation.
Yes, Jacob romancers got very screwed over in ME3, but his romance wasn't a favorite of either gender player. (Mostly due to Femshep's creepy comeons) Thane's was tragic, but that was made obvious before the romance ever started. The player went into it with full knowledge.

What you do is change your character's gender flags -- so male Shep is technically acknowledged as female Shepard (but with a male appearance).
They did record a good chunk of dialogue for s/s romances in the game, so there are a lot of voiced options with maleShep flirting with Kaidan. The romance scene is fully voiced too, I believe.
I just got ME1 for the PC and am playing through romancing Ash with my femshep (finally!) Barring the fact that characters call Shep "sir" or "he," and during cutscene moments you can hear male Shep's voice, it is still pretty great.
I found this post which explains how you can change the gender of a custom Shep if you prefer:

You can edit the save to make Kaidan romanceable toward maleShep. There are actual recorded romance dialogue between Kaidan and maleShep like if Liara comes on to Shepard, he would say that he only likes men. It also carries over to ME2 where Kaidan comes and hugs maleShep and say that he loves him. In ME3, the Mars scene has some Kaidan romance if you use a save where you faithful to Kaidan for 2 games.Cagamelo wrote...

Sure, Mass Effect is not real-life. That does however not mean you can simply do whatever the heck you want without breaking suspension of disbelief or risking to be ridiculed.
Personally I find it ridiculous how the romance crap is handled in Dragon Age 2. Turning everyone bi-sexual (or Hawke-sexual?) was a bad move.
I mean I already find it hard to take this romance crap in BioWare's games seriously as it is, but the way it was handled in Dragon Age 2 was just plain ridiculous. Luckily, Dragon Age 2 at least marked all the romance dialogue options with a big pink heart, so I knew which dialogue options I should avoid at all cost. If there is anything I hate about Mass Effect, it's being ninjamanced when all I really wanted is just to be a nice guy to my squad members.

Stop whining. You have Liara, Kaidan, Garrus, Thane and Traynor as loyal romance options.
With Jacob, you can actually make up in the Citadel DLC.
You can start a romance with Samara in the Citadel DLC also.
And then you can also have a one-night-stand with both James and Javik.
So seriously, you have no reason to QQ the way you do. BioWare obviously doesn't hate you, so stop whining.

I'm not gonna touch on the DA2 romance because it's just gonna end up in tons of uncessary arguments and it's just overdone at this point. Plus, it's off-topic. I'm not sure how having 2 gay romance is breaking immersion, especially considering the amount of straight romance we have in the game. I don't remember being ninjaromance by anyone in ME3, especially with the lock-in moments where you have to tell them specifically that you love them.

Did I ever say having 2 gay romance options is immersion-breaking? Nope, I didn't.
And I wasn't talking about just ME3. I was talking about Mass Effect in general. I have been ninjamanced by Liara, Jack and Tali on my first few playthroughs. Luckily I quickly discovered how to avoid those ninjamances on my later playthroughs.

Well, you quoted me and say that having one gay option is just real life, and I said that it's a video game, so it's not real life, which then you say that it's breaking immersion. If that's not what you're referring to, then I guess we're misunderstood each other. In DA, you need to flirt to initiate the romance, it wouldn't hurt if ME incprporate something similar, I suppose.Heretic_Hanar wrote...

Because of my knowledge of past Bioware ninjamances, I actually ended up being a dick to Cortez in one of his conversations because I was afraid the other dialgue option would trigger a romance. I felt pretty bad when I later learned that it wouldn't have.Heretic_Hanar wrote...

People talk about ninjaromance in Bioware games, there are still hints that you're romancing that particular person. If you want to talk about ninjaromance, the worst one is actually Dragon's Dogma. I was a pedophile in that game for some reasons. <_<Cthulhu42 wrote...
