RtO = market test?

This is more about Marketing than it is about RtO, so don't start ragging about, "Not _another_ RtO thread!"

Look at all of the grief that has occurred in regards to the RtO release.

From those that have played it, it sounds like a 30-minute quest -- for $5.

Now compare that to Soldiers' Peak/Wardens' Keep for $7.

It's hard to imagine
A) The production and distribution being screwed up _worse_ than it already is.  Yet, people ARE expecting even more screwups.
B) Less Bang For The Buck.  30 minutes?  For $5

Could all this actually be Market Research?  Trying to see whether enough people will _still_ buy product, even after one foul up after another.  To see whether or not the resentment for poor/non-performance would ever get dangerously close to a possible consumer boycott.  Or to establish that consumer complaints can actually be totally ignored because even after MANY problems, the customers will STILL throw money at the company.

And just what IS the least amount of content that consumers will accept for the nominal price of $5?  Is this to get us all to the point of, "It's a new month and we now have a NEW sub-quest for you for _only_ $5!"?  Imagine if instead of bundling in the umpteen dozen sub-quests, each had been released as a DLC at $5 a pop.  Instead of $60 for the complete game, it would turn into $200!  Such a prospect has a LOT of appeal to a for-profit company.  And Wardens' Keep and Return to Ostagar may very will have been a testing of the waters.

Mini-DLCs: the wave of the future!

It's true for me: I'm expecting even more screwups from now on. In the past, when you start seeing a DLC product or game delayed over and over, it just keeps happening.

I think they should've charged more & got technically proficient people to work on it.

In reality all products released are what you are calling "market-tests".

DLC, as long as it's been around, is still a new market as evidenced by the wide disparity between prices and the amount of content. So yes one possibility is they are doing stress tests so to speak, how far will they bend before they break. Personally I view it simply as a way of recouping the loss or very low profits generated from the base game.

Considering all the man hours that have now been sunk into this thing trying to get it debugged and ready for an actual launch, even with the $5 price tag and low amount of content they may not come away with all that much profit.

My totally well-founded theory is that all the failures around RtO can be attributed to the extremely potent virus contained in the DLC, which keeps infecting the servers and development tools. Once RtO is released, the virus will take over every customer's computer, erase their personal information and transmit their location back to EA before physically destorying the computer hardware. Then EA will use this list to send out hitmen and assassinate all their customers and their families. They will do this because it will provide them valuable research data on whether or not they can get away with it.

Go ahead and try to deny these facts. You will only expose yourself as an EA plant.

Gotta say, this is sort of reminding me of Bethseda and their DLC shenanigans...

*totally agrees with Aratham*

Oh, and the guys at EA actually kill kittens, too. Every Monday and Friday. Tuesday and Wednesday are reserved for pissing the customers with false announcements, Thursday is free. Didn't you guys get the memo on this?

Well I'm not getting RtO after the waste of money that is Warden's Keep and The Stone Prisoner. I hope there are many others out there who will do the same. All I want is a patch to fix the original game which I paid good money for. They can shove their DLC and expansion.

Rule 1. If they do not fix the original game do not buy any DLC, expansion or the inevitable sequel.

Pretty simple and I'm sure there are people who follow it for any game regardless of the developer.

And my Mari hound likes killing kittens too. He finds it very irritating.

@lisakover: Actually RTO, at 400 Microsoft points, costs £3.33, based on standard rate of £17.50 for 2100 points. That equates to $5.42, just so you know.

As regards to value of RTO - I always compare to cinema prices when working out value. RTO is about half the price of a cinema ticket, which is normally good for about two hours. As such, I would expect at least an hour of entertainment out of RTO. Playing through it once, it is clear that there is significantly less than this, but with multiple play-throughs I think that it will probably just about prove its worth.

And you have fallen to the cunning financing strategy of Microsoft. They would've already turned your 17.50 pounds into 2100 pounds by now.

Imho, not bad price, it's only U$5, stop whining about that; just don't smoke cigar or pot the next party and/or don't get mindlessly drunk and there you have it.

the whole DLC thing is relatively new, so obviously all the publishers are gonna experiment with it and max their profit.

Oh yes, of course, if you paid and got nothing not only you should get ASAP the product, but also be indemnified without question (and all of their clients should get extra bonuses for their irresponsibility with schedules). What I mean is the price of the DLC per se is good, not for the ones who have already payed for it and got nothing.

Aye, I agree with the OP, it's what Bethesda did with the horse armour. Hopefully they will come away with the conclusion that meaty dlc will be more profitable than the tiny slices but I doubt it.

EDIT:  Those who read VG Cats will probably get this quote, "Why make something great when good sells better?"

it's not a money issue, but what replay value?  it's too short for anything other than a few lines of dialog and there are zero significant choices made.
