I wouldn't call it a 'hit'. There are definitely many new players in public lobbies, likely thanks to holiday sales - but it's not a bad thing, is it? It's a sign there's still interest in the game, not that something's gone wrong with the player base.
The BSN doesn't like it when their predictions of doom don't come to pass. But I can confirm that there are a lot of new Xbox players (N7 < 100) as well, and a lot of them are playing really hard. I just think it's great there are more people playing.
I've also seen a surprising number of the old hands, who haven't played in a while, coming back for a game here and there.
Besides, it's kinda fun to watch them struggle and feel all superior.

There were times recently when I couldn't find a decent Gold lobby, and I'd take my non-levelled character to Silver, where I'd find a bunch of guys with high N7 and CP (and often consumables) ready to go. I figured Silver was the place to go after you maxed your manifest.
Yesterday I finished a Gold pug and discovered I needed 237 points more to complete the Executioner challenge. So I figured I'd drop into a Bronze game, shoot a couple Cannibals, and leave again so the slot would be open.
The game I dropped into was full of people near the top of the CP leaderboards. I stayed out of curiosity. The game lasted about 12 minutes. Back in the lobby, the total CP was about half a million.... ![]()
