A good guide. A few things that might also be worth mentioning.

(1) There are diminishing returns, saving just 100k should get your chars to lvl 5 on average, 200k to lvl 8, 300k lvl 10, 700k to avg lvl 16. Those last levels take a lot of XP!

(2) A recruit pack gives on average 43.5k XP (there's a thread on it somewhere), distributed evenly, which can be used to work out the above figures.

On getting the most XP from matches:

(1) Unknown map gives +25% xp, unknown enemy +15%, a known hazard map gives +15%. Even if U/U gives you a hazard map you only get +40%. So you really want to be playing U/U games. Preferably hosting to be certain or at least dropping out of preset map/enemy lobbies. In addition the collectors seem to give a lot less XP (about 20% less).

(2) U/U/S against non-collectors should net about 240k XP, a gold set enemy/map game only gives approx 315k. A gold U/U approx 440k.

On playing most effectively with low level chars (yes I know some people are good enough to play lvl 1's on gold/plat but for the rest of us):

(1) Some gear can make a big difference to your effectiveness, grenade cap V, armoured compartments V are two examples. In most classes using Grenade gear can make the biggest single difference to a low level char.

(2) Some chars within a class have benefits that are available even at low level eg tankiness/melee for krogans and batarians, tac cloak melee for volus.

(3) Spending points wisely, the first point in the skill trees is the best value, the next 5 (ranks 2 and 3) generally only provide recharge speed and a bit more damage. Fitness and the passives are most easily compensated for by one-time-use equipment.

Anything relying on Biotic explosions is a poor choice due to how B/E damage is calculated.

Promote, start a lobby with a TGI+Harrier, be afk all game, and let the PUGs do the heavy work.

Host platinum match, equip Harrier TGI, go AFK, get carried through at least a few waves before teammates rage quit and match ends, repeat.

I actually finished a Platinum game with him once. Of course, he conveniently started playing just after we'd done wave 2 of Jade/Geth/Plat, but we both somehow extracted.

Don't forget occasionally go full try hard if you get reaper/giant so you can post a missile inflated score in a Facebook group full of people who are easily impressed.
