Most protagonists tend to be young in Bioware games. Hawke was around 24 at the start of DA2, Shepard was only 29 in ME1. I think it would be cool if they let us play an older character for once. Like someone in their early 40s. A badass veteran with decades of experience. What do you think?

I liked Shepard's age range, but I'd say anywhere from late 20s to late 30s works for me. I don't really enjoy when kids are saviors of the world (well most of the time anyways).

Anywhere between Late 30's to early 40's would be the ideal age in my opinion. Old enough to earn some respect from peers and have experience to back it up, yet young enough to do all the action oriented stuff required of DA heroes. I suspect the main character is supposed to be trying to find out the goings on behind the scenes, and this suggests a more mature protagonist.

30s, 40s, 50s, enough of these whippersnappers, this is a job for a grown up. (I will be over in this corner hiding from everyone aged 29 and under).

Aragorn was 87 at the beginning of Lord of the Rings, so there.

The one I just want to add, it doesn't matter what age they say the character is, if both the male and female models don't look the part.

Way too often (especially with the female characters) characters look like like young, babyfaced, early 20 somethings when they are supposed to be 30+.

EDIT: The opposite is also true, early 20s male characters looking like mid to late 30s (or even 40s) battle scarred veterans.

I probably prefer fairly young because it means less pre-written backstory that'll have to be revealed through play.

16-17, and if you want a really grizzled veteran of sorts, early 20s.

I wonder how many people would play a character who is 50+ years? Ageism is one of those "isms" that rarely gets mentioned - sexism and racism are the usual suspects - but a reasonably young and attractive protag is expected, especially female. No wrinkled war veterans or old battle-axes, please.

That's because people want to make their OWN characters from scratch. 50 year old would have a huge preset life with a very preset character.

Such things work outside RPG's, like.. Starcraft 2 for example, both Raynor and Kerrigan, main characters are in their mid or late thirties, and are mature, but you don't roleplay them.

Right, I have equipped the whirling death scythes to the zimmer frames, time to get these hooligans off our lawn.

And on a slightly more on topic note, I have no qualms about playing a character with a pre-set past, it might not have been a very long past, but that is basically what DAO offered.

I doubt people make attractive young characters for that reason alone. Maybe the protag is a 50 year old farmer that never fought a battle in his/her life? They would be starting from scratch.

No, it's about appearance - it always is really. Everyone wants their character to look 'nice'. I'm guilty of that myself.

Well that's not a guilt, people do indeed want to look nice, nothing wrong with that.

It would be nice if the character creator would let you make that big age decision yourself, by adding wrinkes and whatnot if you choose...without the story being completely dependent on it.

Although that would require a lot more face detail than previous BioWare character creators seem to have supported.

I want a hero that is old enough to fit the story.
