I hope we get a player character with an Orlesian accent.

And not every Orlesian character needs to have a theatrical, over-the-top sounding accent. Two good examples of French accents that weren't over the top were Leliana and Riordan.

Would anyone be disappointed if the actor who voiced Riordan also voiced the protagonist, or one of your companions?

I know I wouldn't. Riordan sounded like a bad@ss.

Indeed, Riordan/Stroud VA for the male PC would be perfect.

And someone who sounds similar to Leliana for the female PC, but not the same VA because, well, that's too familiar I think.

There are multiple rumours and speculations that the brunt of the game will take place in or around orlais. This means that we'll probably be conversing a lot with the upper class there. I hope i'm not the only one when I hope that they please keep the french upper class orlesian accent to a minimum.

I mean, yes, it does do a good job of sounding like they're better then you, but I really don't want to listen to it the entire game... In DA:O it was reduced to a minute amount, and DAII had a just bareable amount, But I wanted to rip off my ears by the end of mark of the assassin.

Please bioware, spare us :)

Gee, good thing nobody minds british accents, otherwise DAO would have suuuuuucked.

We'll get the accents of the characters we encounter. That means when we're in orlais we'll get French, when in Ferelden we'll get British, when we meet Dwarves we'll get American, Dalish Elves will be Welsh, Anderfels will probably be German, aaaand so on.

It's called world building and proper talent casting, and I'm quite satisfied with the direction Bioware has been doing.

One thing is certain: I wouldn't want a game that does away with anything (including accents) just to cater to the intolerant few.

If Fereldan city elves sound American, I wonder if Orlesian city elves sound like French Canadians.

People have got to get over themselves. There is nothing wrong with the French accent. Trust me, there are worse accents out there. Examples? Nasaly Australian, Canadian and American accents, Welsh, Irish, Scottish, English (to a degree) and Kiwi accents. But the French accent isn't annoying.

The French have a more refined accent (as per their general attitude) than most. I'm looking at Americans, specifically those that haven't been trained vocally (i.e. actors and singers).

My guess is it's more of a prejudice against the French, rather than an actual distaste for the accent.

I'm french myself and I found the orlesians accents, excepted Leliana, horribly exagerrated and annoying to hear. Of course it also added a comedic relief but if Orlais is full of them... ugh.

It doesn't really bother me either way since I'll most likely play DAIII in french version, assuming they choose decent voice actors, but I feel the pain for others.

I would really love a southern draw! I know it doesn't fit here but maybe someday somewhere in Theadus some dashing steel plated fellow will use words like y'all, howdy and call my character Ma'am! /squee

LOL wouldn't it be funny if they used Mountain Man from Duck Dynasty!!!

Genuine French accents are beautiful. But like in any part of the world, there are many versions of the French accent. I like alot of them and I would love for the protagonist to have one. Honestly, I'm tired of the majority of the people in sword and sorcery games having English accents. Don't get me wrong, I love English accents. I'm just a little burned out on them in DA. I'd like it if they mixed it up a little. Some joke about Russian accents, but again, I find them beautiful.

Bad fake accents are terrible and Bioware usually does a good job of keeping that out.

The French accents people are railing against (Isolde) aren't even real French accents. They are theatrical accents, and greatly exaggerated. Even French people that don't have a strong command of the English language do not sound like Isolde.

Hence the people complaing that an Orlesian protagonist would sound like Isolde, are exaggerating just as much as her voice actress did. Posted Image

A good example would be Berenice Marlohe. She has a heavy French accent when speaking English, but sounds nothing like Isolde.

Why an accent? In Orlais everbody would speak orlesian, so there wouldn't be an accent.

I would rather go the route of pronouncing the english accent of Ferelden characters more, instead of letting every Orlesian speak with a french accent.

Or let all the Orlesians actually speak french with subtitles. Or just the women. I love french speaking females :D

To be fair, Isolde could have been speaking Hindi and I would still want to shove her head under water. For that I will say the voice actress did a fantastic job of making me HATE Isolde.

I lol'd. Scottish accents can be pretty hard to understand, but they're still cool.:)

As far as the French accents in the game are concerned, I don't really mind any of them.

I'm not much of a fan of the French accent in general, so I'd also prefer the Orlesians to refrain from making extreme use of it. sorry to all native speakers but it's really tiring to listen to for a long time...at least for me :? and playing with subs and the TV muted isn't an option I'd welcome either :/
but I guess we'll have to wait some more till we find out :D

I would love a French accent for the PC. I took a few semesters of French in college (and was woefully terrible at it...) and I could listen to my professor talk for hours. She had a voice like Leliana's... sweet and soft (almost musical, as silly as that seems to say) and it was just beautiful. Done well, and I think a company like Bioware could be trusted to find a pleasing PC voice actor/actress, it would be really cool.

Yes, I wrote a couple of posts on Isolde accent a couple of years ago

You can't speak grammatically and sound like Isolde at the same time.

Leliana sounds pretty much exactly like how a French person who has learned english sounds. If the accents are similar to her's, I won't have any problems.

I hope the game is full of over-the-top fake accents of every ethnicity so I can laugh at all your whiny forum posts that would inevitably ensue.

You have to admit, "Who is this man, Teagan" became epic only because of the fake accent.

That said, I hope they use native speakers FFS.
