It's a fanfic series that has Mass Effect characters, but not the actual characters. Like, I'm wanting to write a series that uses people from ME, like Commander Shepard and Garrus and Ashley, but they have different names and personalities. Basically, they would be casted as different characters. And I would post pictures to let you know who was playing who. I don't know if that's related to Mass Effect 3 enough or if I should post this fanfiction in another tread.

If they have different names and personalities, then they aren't characters already established. No offense, but I don't see what you're asking here.

You want to use characters, but then you don't?

If your characters have a different name and personality to their supposed analogues, then just make them original characters.

I wouldn't know what to call that. An original character has an original appearance.

What if they're similar characters to the ones in the ME universe, but not completely due to writing purposes?

So you're saying you want similar characters and ones that wear similar equipment? That's not too offensive of an idea, but you should take some liberty.

Tali for example, has unique robes and hoods, this is because she is a main character, every quarian in the lore is supposed to be unique like she is. But remember, that is also HER clothing. Quarian customization is unique to them.

Garrus on the other hand? The War Paint in the lore, I believe is a clan or family tie, you could possibly do that, however yet again. Turians look different from each other, it is simply a GAME limitation, that they all look like the way they do. His armor and visor are NOT unique models.

Writing Fanfiction about the original characters is not Mary-Sue, nor is making something inspired or similar to them. Mary Sues are typically self inserts, but don't have to be, to be blunt, a Mary Sue is your over powered pet characters that act like god.

So to be blunt, this isn't really relevant to him at all. He's just trying to make similar character designs (if I understand it right). Not make ego-stroking.

Pretty much, a parody of The Walking Dead with ME characters.

It'll be more like a black comedy though.
