according to a google engie, drm isnt about anti-piracy, but is instead a giant middle finger to consumers.
now that i think about it, where did the idea that drm is anti-piracy anyway?
i thought i aught to share. what do u guys think? now knowing that drm is ultimately a tool to price-gouge us, how do you see things differently?
discuss!
so...drm ISNT about piracy..

Well i never thought it was about anti-piracy. I mean logic, you think the pirates haven't found a way to play Diablo III offline?
I can't say I'm surprised that the real reason has to do with increased profits, but in truth I think that devs and publishers know that pirates will always find a way, so wasting time and resources to "combat" them seems like even more of a waste.

It's both, really. Very much so a tool to control how consumers use what they've bought (note the prevailing attitude in many media industries is that users have simply purchased a license for a game or movie or song, not actually bought the game/movie/song itself), but I have no doubt anti-piracy continues to figure into the equation somewhat.
Is it a bit deluded? Yes, but the RIAA spent a ton of time and money attempting to fight music downloads, and that was at a time when content was still mostly distributed via physical media (and thus they had much less control over what the user did with it after it was bought). I'm sure many companies feel (even if there is no basis for it) that draconian DRM helps reduce piracy even a little bit, and it's something they can point to for investors and show that they're trying.

it just seems Corporations are being intentionally obtuse on this matter. What can we do on our end to bring about a more harmonious outcome? While I dont condone the method, I do understand the message that this is a knee-jerk reaction to something thats hurting them as ridiculous as that might sound.
