My guess - they're working on implementing some sort of default weekend bonus, like 2x credits, or a weekly repeating operation.

That sounds quite likely. Maybe Comm Packs will have a guaranteed UR card now.

I hope they are not gone. I am also going to say something I shouldn't.
i wish they would release some map packs / content you had to pay for. I say that because if they were successful the multiplayer would have a good shot at sticking around for a decent amount of time. I'd be willing to pay for them.

They told us in advance when they were releasing the last DLCs. If they were cancelling weekend ops, they'd have had plenty of chance to do it. The last one was a big event, with three commendation packs they'd have said, "Here we go, we're going all out, this is where the story ends - it's been a blast!"
I can't think why they'd be coy about ending something as relatively minor as the weekend operations when they were so open about ending DLC support. If this is where it ends, I have a hunch it won't be for want of trying. My guess is that they're trying to implement a new system but haven't quite got it running yet.
