Gathered quite a lot of them?

Is there any use for them later in the game? For some kind of crafting maybe? (though they are not listed in crafting items section).

Or are they here just so you can sell them to a merchant for some nice amount of coins?

I am actually curious about this too. I have been saving my gems in case they are used as crafting items but, I am starting to think they are just "treasure" and should be sold for coin.

Yup... think so too. Although would like to get any kind of confirmation on this... because I would hate it to discover after dozen hours of playing that I might need them for something!

Are they like precious stones (i.e. sapphires, rubies) or the crystals that are used to upgrade Shale?

I had been holding on to them too and have finally taken the plunge and just sold them off. Fingers crossed.

Players can either sell the gems for coin as they want, or they can use the gems to 'resupply' the Dwarven army after completing Orzammar.

I've been holding them for the 'resupply' of the Dwarven army, but what does that do exactly?

I kept them as long as possible, but as the bagpack run full I had to sell them.

What about the higher gems like diamonds, shapphire? All Vendor trash ?

Mine are all stored in the party camp storage mod. I'm tempted to sell them all off though, but will hang onto them for a bit longer.

Sapphires, Amethysts, and Malachites can be turned in for experience to the allied supply crates after completing the Orzammar main quest line. Everything else is vendor fodder.

The third type the dwarves accept are malachite.

edit: Beaten like a red-headed step-child.

I also have Topaz written down as accepted by dwarves in the communal chest. (So I guess sapphires/malachites/topazes/amethysts are taken by the dwarves.)

Also I suggest keeping 10 garnets for a quest in the Denerim bar.

Greenstone/Quartz/Fluorspar/Emerald/Ruby/Diamond did not seem to have any use in the game except as something to sell.

Don't they accept Topaz's as well? I remember it as MAST, malachite, amethyst, sapphire and topaz.

Malachite/Amethyst/Sapphire/Topaz = XP from Dwarves chest ('resupply their army')

Garnets x10 = quest in Denerim bar

Diamond/Emerald/Fluorspar/Greenstone/Quartz/Ruby = pure vendor trash
