I'm only on my second playthrough; first with a warrior and now with a mage as arcane warrior. What are people's thoughts on the balance between the two? I like the idea of having magic to back up my combat
(or vice versa) but is the arcane warrior just a compromise and unable to compete with a warrior or other mage specialisation?

If you want to kill things in melee a warrior is better, if you want to take a pounding an AW is better (higher armor, 25% miss chance). I generally treat an AW as a mage who becomes a warrior when he runs out of mana and there's nothing left alive that requires chugging a lyrium potion. The problem with the AW is a lack of attack, it's really hard to get a good attack on one, unless you're willing to spend a few ability points on dex and learn a bunch of buff spells.

The thing I like about it is that it opens up another play style. You could make a high dex, low magic AW (maybe 50?) that focused on healing and buff spells (which aren't all that spellpower dependent) and play it as a cleric or paladin. It may not be the best way to spec your mage, but it's certainly playable (you might even be able to solo with it, since you could manage a really high defense and armor value as well as still have a few CC spells).

Where do you get Arcane Warrior?  I was thinking about making Wynne into one sense she is basically strictly support and could use a better defense.

It's in the lower Brecilian ruins, in a side room
