Well the low 18% for femshep is not surprising. Not when I meet dudes, and a few women, who think that a woman should not do all the things Shepard does. A few dudes have even told me that they cannot handle a woman talking the way Shepard does, she should be just sexy and not talk, oh and make them a sandwich... In the end, true hero = male, in a lot of peoples minds. This ain't gonna change until people start to change their gendered views.

Pretty naive statement there. At the end of the day the fact is that the majority of gamers are guys and if the majority of those guys prefer to play as male shep it doesn't automatically mean they're sexist. :/

Actually the number of women gamers are almost as high as men gamers. Only when it comes to Facebook games and similar women play more.

Most women I know who play games (no matter what genre we're talking about) have no problem being a male character. The opposite is not true, a lot of dude gamers I know don't like playing a female character. Unless she have a really nice ass they can look at, but even then most don't like it. The easy answer for this is: sexism. Simple as that really.

except I dont care if she has a nice ass, only woman I ever played as was Samus, and that is because she has a fine rear bumper covered by practical power armor. Except until Metroid Other M ...damn japs kind a ruined her character on that game.

In other words... yes I agree, I can't play as a female unless I can see she is not a female. Front and rear bumpers are all nice but they dont register in my mind as bullet proof.

Isn't Wrex dead by default in non-imports? That may be a telling sign of who started a new Shep, and who imported. Especially seeing as many held off from importing until the face bug was fixed.

That was kind of stupid of them. There's a workaround to get your old face that works even on consoles. Takes a bit of time, but it can be done.

That has to be the dumbest reason I have ever heard.

That's like saying not pursuing a same sex romance for not liking it that way, you're homophobic.

Yes. Sad, but true. We're in the minority. Bioware has the numbers. Depending upon the study you read women make up between 28% and 47% of gamers.

Yeah, I'm going to have to agree a bit here. Not saying there's never any sexism at play, but why can't it sometimes just be a case of "I want to play whatever feels more familiar"? I'm female, and in any game-situation where I can choose between a male or a female character, I'll go for the female. Sure, I have no issues with the protagonist being male, but I won't be identifying with the character as much. But I guess it depends on what experince you are looking for in a game.

Although I have had a male friend tell me that if given a choice, he'll play a female character because it "gives him something nice to look at". We don't always see eye to eye when it comes to gaming...

Some of these stats don't even make sense; how can Vega have a survival rate almost 30% higher than Liara's? How did Liara apparently die almost half the time?

Actually, I can see that. Since Vega was less popular than Liara, he got killed on the beam run less often.

Non ME1 imports, to be specific. Only 50% of ME2 players imported from ME1. Some fraction of ME2 players who didn't import had a PS3 or the interactive comic and so had a chance of getting Wrex, but still... do the math.

That is measleading as it depends on what type of game you are referring to. In total yes, but more accurate would be how many woman were playing ME.

There's some truth behind the notion that playing as the opposite gender is unpopular with many gamers. No One Lives Forever 3 was canned due to poor sales of A Spy in HARMs Way. Market researchers found most male FPS gamers didn't want to play as Cate Archer.

I've never really been that hung up on it personally, because I typically think of the main character as the main character, rather my digital alter ego, but clearly YMMV.

Okay, replace Vega with Garrus in my question then.

I'm thinking that Liara is just the main "poplular" character, because she is required on some missions...

Also, who wouldn't want to Bring Liara on Leviathan to bring more explanation to the Reapers?
Liara and Garrus on Sur'kesh after seeing the Demo with nice conversations between them and Wrex and expecting for some more?
Ardat Yakshi Monastery to see what her opinion was since she is an Asari

PS: These are just my thoughts, I'm not speaking for anyone, just for me

Doesn't the survival rate refer to combat deaths a.k.a. how often you did not have to revive them. That's the only way it make sense. James is a tank.

This.

There was a game( I don't remeber what game, I'm going to check it out later), it's old, but you play as a bounty hunter who wants to defend the galaxy from Space Monsters, and has awesome powers and uses a helmet.

In the end game, the character takes the armor off and then the reveal: the Character is FEMALE!
Hell, it was epic, her powers were unique and all, that was extremely well done to show that women can also be on Video games/ Play Video games... Too bad SOME people don't agree with this.

Its Samus... and shame on you for not remember her name. ALso she is one of the mostpopular female characters in video game history. The game you are referring to is called Metroid came for the Nintendo. Many series since. She is hot and in charge, and is because she doesn't rely on lady parts to do the talking... motly her boot down an alien's throat.

The reason I respect her the mos tis because she actually has some damn armor while she is kicking ass.
And as I mentioned before she is THE only female I will ever played. Because she is hotter while in her armor than outside of it.
Anyways she is still popular despite recent crappy writting on Metroid Other M.

And this is her...
