There's some truth behind the notion that playing as the opposite gender is unpopular with many gamers. No One Lives Forever 3 was canned due to poor sales of A Spy in HARMs Way. Market researchers found most male FPS gamers didn't want to play as Cate Archer.

I've never really been that hung up on it personally, because I typically think of the main character as the main character, rather my digital alter ego, but clearly YMMV.

This.

There was a game( I don't remeber what game, I'm going to check it out later), it's old, but you play as a bounty hunter who wants to defend the galaxy from Space Monsters, and has awesome powers and uses a helmet.

In the end game, the character takes the armor off and then the reveal: the Character is FEMALE!
Hell, it was epic, her powers were unique and all, that was extremely well done to show that women can also be on Video games/ Play Video games... Too bad SOME people don't agree with this.

I remember playing that game! If you find the title, please please please send me a message!

GOT IT! Super Metroid is the name of the game ;)

Yes. Sad, but true. We're in the minority. Bioware has the numbers. Depending upon the study you read women make up between 28% and 47% of gamers.

I am actually a guy and played as one aswell however with how many people on here who state they prefer femshep i was expecting it to be much higher

well that depends on how many females actually bought the game. Without that number is impossible to say. you can add all the games of all developers and then say X% are females. But that is misleading. What matters is individually how many of each gender play a specific game. It varies greatly depending on the game.

Its Samus... and shame on you for not remember her name. ALso she is one of the mostpopular female characters in video game history. The game you are referring to is called Metroid came for the Nintendo. Many series since. She is hot and in charge, and is because she doesn't rely on lady parts to do the talking... motly her boot down an alien's throat.

The reason I respect her the mos tis because she actually has some damn armor while she is kicking ass.
And as I mentioned before she is THE only female I will ever played. Because she is hotter while in her armor than outside of it.
Anyways she is still popular despite recent crappy writting on Metroid Other M.

And this is her...

Even if they didn't take that into account, it's still not a very useful statistic. Liara, Garrus and Vega are picked up first, Tali and the VS are picked up last. There's no doubt the first three are always going to be used more. And then you have the fact that without Javik, Liara is your only biotic for the first half of the game. More bias in her favor.

Biotics werent essential in this game. Not even on insanity.

Ahhh I miss it...
I wish I could remembers the titles of old video games I've played... there was one with a music video at the end, I just can't remember it.

I'm currently reading angry comments regarding people choosing the Geth over the Quarians... it seems like a good choice to me.

On Kaidan and Ashley popularity count.

How in the galaxy were they counting?!
Kaidan is only available to something like 2\\3 of missions ( at best, I don't have accurate numbers right now). Now how can his "popularity" be compared with Liara, James or Garrus?

In case someone did not understand what I'm saying:
We have James with us 10 out of 10 missions ( 100%), but we have Kaidan only 6 out of 10 missions total (60%) (but that's 100% of time he's avalible). Now which is supposed to be more popular?.. Why do I have a feeling that they might have forgotten to count percentage basing on _real_ in-game availability instead of total mission counter?...And that should same affect Ashley's numbers, and slightly - EDI's too ( because she needs some time to get her body).

uhhh... ok.

Sorry I must have misread, thought you said you played it. Anyways.

Samus Aran!, Paragon of females... well until Female Shepard came along. No priviledges no exceptions. Both are awesome as they shove their boot or omnitool in an enemie's face.

I'm shocked so many people let Garrus win, I think he would be mad if he found out you let him win. He doesn't come off as someone who needs their ego stroked.

I use Garrus and Liara the most. Was that way in ME1 and continued to be so in ME3.

Haven't played Soldier since ME1 love my biotics, and techs, I get bored on soldier.

No Wrex in 64% of games, man that sucks for those people lol.

Not really surprising. They marketed the game as a third person shooter (and rightly so), so people played the Soldier.

Or it is because the default character is the soldier, ME2 soldier was by far the most played class as well.

There are emulators and pictures of old games. If you remember what type of game it was there aren't that many that were good so it would probably take you 30 mins throuh memory lane.
coolroms.com is a good start.

Some of these stats don't even make sense; how can Vega have a survival rate almost 30% higher than Liara's? How did Liara apparently die almost half the time?

Actually, I can see that. Since Vega was less popular than Liara, he got killed on the beam run less often.

Okay, replace Vega with Garrus in my question then.

Good point. They're identically popular.

I didn't see any reason why Shep would win the contest, except that Bio lets Shep be awesome at everything.

Well the low 18% for femshep is not surprising. Not when I meet dudes, and a few women, who think that a woman should not do all the things Shepard does. A few dudes have even told me that they cannot handle a woman talking the way Shepard does, she should be just sexy and not talk, oh and make them a sandwich... In the end, true hero = male, in a lot of peoples minds. This ain't gonna change until people start to change their gendered views.

Pretty naive statement there. At the end of the day the fact is that the majority of gamers are guys and if the majority of those guys prefer to play as male shep it doesn't automatically mean they're sexist. :/

Actually the number of women gamers are almost as high as men gamers. Only when it comes to Facebook games and similar women play more.

Most women I know who play games (no matter what genre we're talking about) have no problem being a male character. The opposite is not true, a lot of dude gamers I know don't like playing a female character. Unless she have a really nice ass they can look at, but even then most don't like it. The easy answer for this is: sexism. Simple as that really.

Hmmm. Not sure if trolling.

Wow, Kaidan, really? That LOW? His abilities are probably the best, along with Liara >.> Garrus is awesome for taking out mooks.
I bet most people just play Ashley a lot because she gets featured a lot in trailers, she got cosmetic surgery, and because she's pleasing to most men O.o

M3h... she turned to sexy. Plus make up and all while sweating, running and funning?... nah.

I mean if she had had make up on the citadel party or something I dont mind, not otherwise.

As some fan said once forgot who she was "Ashley got all barbie on us".. I agree.

Love all the passive-aggressiveness in here. One of the main reasons you didn't/won't see any stats on the ending especially during a panel is probably due to the reason that as soon as it is brought up that is the only type of questions that would be asked to them and that isn't the reason for the panel.

Yay, I'm one of the top 4% who finished insanity, but I wonder how it counts it b/c I had 4 playthroughs and all were insanity.

I shot Mordin once as the 'pure renegade'
Liara and Garrus were my top 2 squadmates but I am AMAZED that VEGA is the 3rd most used.

Survival rate of the squadmate? Dunno what that means

Soldier is the MOST POPULAR class?! By FAR! I hate soldier and have playthroughs with Engi ( ME1 he was a beast ) Infiltrator and Adept

Those are hardly any representative. Do you even remember how people "chose" synthesis in vanilla (when you simply could not understand which way to move and what does what) 8P

Wow, Kaidan, really? That LOW?

As I said - we need to know how did they manage to compare "popularity" of squad which is avalible all the time with squad which becomes playable only after you beat something like 1\\3 of main content. What was their total 100%?

It is not that there is a problem. A good chunk of Femshep fans, well at least on here, do not like that dress. I honestly think it depends on the look of your femshep.

I never went with Kaiden because as great as he is, i liked Liara more in ME1 and as a Engi, i COULDN'T run with another biotic, so I  usually went either Garrus or Wrex.

Liara was absolutely 100% necessary against Krogans in ME1.
