None. New game = new companions.

This.

There is no reason to bring in old companions when there is a completely new PC in my opinion.

Especially from DA:O. So many people played their Wardens differently...that you can't just bring in their old companions without ruining someone's DA:O playthrough.

You definitely can NEVER bring in the Warden as a NPC because of this.

In my opinion...the new game needs to try and remove itself from DA:O as much as possible in terms of time frame and it's relation to the characters of that game.

None. I would prefer all new companions. Cameos from returning characters are ok though.

Cullen was basically head of the Kirkwall Circle by the end of DAII. Meredith died, whatever you chose the Circle's basically exploded, and then a big mage war was kicked off; not much time to properly decide who'll be the next leader. So, Cullen actually has a reason to be at the Grand Cathedral: the Divine is going to want some answers.

Admittedly, I think the templars have revolted, but I wouldn't be shocked to see Cullen still co-operating with the Chantry. Also, I think the seekers are supposed to be handling most of the whole investigation business, but still.

Personally, I wouldn't mind Cullen as a companion, but I'm not actively demanding it. His role has gradually been expanding over the course of the games, and the whole tragic romance vibe is always nice, but whether he'd make a good "companion" is still up in the air.

Dude's come a long way from originally running from the Circle and killing a bunch of the mages in the original epilogue...

All of this.  I want to hear Cullen's side of the story and his presence around the conflict can be easily explained, particularly if he's left the Templars becuase he's disgusted that they would revolt against the Chantry's authority (seeing as Meredith showed him what a Templar making up her own rules looked like).  Also, I want to have quests to find him lyrium to keep him from withdrawal (or be evil and watch him suffer, because he hasn't done enough of that in his life, right?)

I don't want my old companions back, but there are NPCs I would like to learn more about.  Cullen tops that list and I don't think many of the others would make good companions.

Feynriel. All other characters can be sent to the maker for all I care.

As long as they come back of course...

Bethany or Carver
Shale

I don't want any one else to come back if they were companions already. Obviously, I don't include Bethany/Carver [since they can be vacant for more than half the game] or Shale if she turns back into her dwarf self, it would be really refreshing and different having her I imagine.

1. Cullen - In DA: O, after the Circle of Magi story, he's very psychologically damaged and is very certain that mages MUST be contained - not like Meredith, but you get the point. Throughout DA: 2 Cullen has shown much support for the Templars cause, but at the very last moment he saw the madness of Meredith.

So, in DA: I, Cullen is against mages from the start, but I would bet that he's not as hostile as right after the Circle. There are so many opportunities to explore with this character.
E.g. As the protagonist you can have heavy influence on how he looks at mages. You can make him think that mages must be contained, but contained properly. Perhaps you can even make him want every mage to be free. Aaaand you can have him hate every mage out there.

What if, when you have influenced his view on mages, you can have him become a major symbol for the people of Thedas. Like when you place Alistair on the throne - difference here is that, how he views the mages' will have a big impact on, how a new templar order could become, if the mages' rebellion have destroyed the templars..

2. Leliana. Kinda obvious really. It's Orlais, she's part of the Seekers and she's very religious. We need the religious sort in this game, as one of the major problems ofc are Templars/Mages conflict, which ultimately comes to the chantry.

3. We need a mage character. Someone that, like Cullen, can become a symbol for the mages. This character must believe in justice, but also order. (companions can't stray too far off each other). Ofc he/she believes that the system needs a change, but he/she still wants the rebellion to stop, so that Thedas can have a better system. Cullen and him/her can have some very interesting conversations, without they won't just end up killing each other. I think this character should be a female. Uuuh Cullen and that character could be lovers. Would make for a very interesting new look on mages and templars.

4. Sten or another qunari. An interesting qunari. Perhaps one that believes in the qun, but still slowly strays away from it. How, I do not know. Anyways, the whole templar/mage thing can't be the only aspect of this univers they'll explore in DA: I. They could have this character help leading up for a game, where the big focus is on The Qunari/Thedas.

5. A person that's somehow connected to the darkspawn. A Grey Warden perhaps, or.. well anything. Darkspawn has been such a big thing from the start. DA: 2 was a more personal story, so not many darkspawns there, but in DA: I things can get crazy, so why the hell not throw a darkspawn related character, that plays an important part in, perhaps, a major darkspawn reveal. Something connected to the chantry... (Black City, sins, Tevinter magisters you know),

yea yea I know it's nearly all new characters. So what..

I'd rather none of them returned. If they're going to return looking puffy and old, it'll just ruin whatever memories I had of them.

If we are playing in the inquisition then no returning characters other than Leliana. I dont see any of the original DAO team joining besides Wynne (and Asunder explaines what happened) and the same would go for the team in DA 2.

So... people like Cullen because of his crush on female mage warden?

So... people want to bring a character almost unimportant in Origins and with a secondary role in 2, just because of that?

I don't mean to be rude, but... are you serious?

It's not as if his role can't be expanded. It already was in DA2.
I don't see the problem.

So you want to bring him and give him a major role just for the sake of it?

"Cullen, what brings you to Val Royeaux?"

"I don't know, I just felt an urgent need to visit the Grand Cathedral"

I have nothing agains't Cullen, but bringing him back just because of that...

What really qualifies a character to come back though, or to be clearer what makes you (not you just in general) ready to accept a character previously used as more than fan service? I mean was Anders fan service? Was Merrill or Isabela?

He's a templar, which sets him up to be in either faction (to some extent). He also has a connection to the two other games and can't die in either.

I could keep going but I doubt people want to hear me.

I don't say this as much of a fangirl - I don't mind particularly whether he does return, in the end - but I really enjoy Cullen as a character. His arc was rather nicely done, and he's a good, relatable representation of the mage-templar war; much of his dialogue allows you to understand the templars' worries about mages, while also iving you a hint of why people are frightened of them. Because of this, I think he could be rather useful as a way of showing the state and concerns of the land you're placed in, just as he did in DA:O - where his plotline concerned the duties and attitudes of templars, and the dangers of them getting too close to their charges - and DA2 - where he was the best source of the templars' opinions next to Meredith herself (who wasn't exactly moderate or balanced).

I'd also like to see the return of Carver/Bethany; it would be a good way of letting the player know where their Hawke got to in the end without actually having to show the PC themselves.

Aveline, Leliana and Isabela would be nice, too; simply because they're three of my favourite female characters in the series, and their return wouldn't require as much consideration of all the awkward variables - the OGB, the state of Flemeth - as bringing back Morrigan.

ETA: As for male? If possible, Anders - having to deal with the aftermath of his actions - as well as Nathaniel, Alistair and Zevran.

Cassandra would be wonderful, so we could see the perspective of someone deeper inside the Chantry, especially an Orlesian.

tl;dr: It's a trick of the writers to use their characters to let us discover and sympathise with Thedas and its issues. I'd like this to continue, which is why it'd be great if Cullen, Carver/Bethany and Cassandra returned.
