I don't mind too much if someone from previous games show up as long as they have a damn good reason for being in the game, but since we are a new person in this game, I'd rather we had brand new characters for companions than old ones.

Every popular character has developed into a well-established role in Thedas, and I have no idea how they would make it work bringing them back into your party.

I know characters like Alistair and of course Morrigan will be major characters in DAI, but I also suppose in a somewhat indispensable position of power.

As for Varric: I'd love to see him again, but on the other hand it would feel wrong to have him wander around with the Inquisitor, when he's officially Hawke's sidekick. All the amazing banter and developing bond of friendship between the two is what made him so special to me; if he's suddenly distant to my protagonist, it just wouldn't -and shouldn't- be the same.

This all said, my only demand is to have a permanent canine companion again, Orlais or no.

I think for companions, I want a new cast, as I feel fresh starts are often best with a new character.

Now, people who could be NPCs:

1. Nate Howe. He's a Grey Warden. Considering it looks like their bases may be being attacked, good chance he could be there.

2. Cullen. I want to see how the situation in DA2 effected him. Is he anti-mage still, is he now even more confused about the notions of sides in this conflict. Endless possibilities.

Although, I can certainly agree with this, too.

I feel the same way about many companions, which is why I don't want any of them returning. Especially not past LIs.

None of them. I'm kind of sick of venturing to strange and foreign lands only to keep running into the same people.

None of the cameos in Dragon Age 2 did it any good. Lelianna's cameo just pissed off people who killed her. Anders' cameo retconned his epilogue and changed his personality. They could have created a brand new abomination character that strived for freedom instead of turning him into it.  Isabela can't be the only female pirate in all of Thedas.

I'd like to SEE Nathaniel and the dwarves (Varric, Shale, Sigrun, Ogren). The only reason I'd want them to be in my party is ... Well, if Nate has a good excuse for it. There's still plenty there.

As for the dwarves, it'll be a tragedy with no option for a dwarf PC if I could ONCE AGAIN come tragically close to an all-dwarf party, only to be foiled by that one spot I can't fill with a dwarf. Someday, this I vow. All dwarves.
