Why do we even need to know if someone is gay or not? Who cares!

So would you hate it if a male character invited your character to go out cruising for chicks?

Not if you asked once and left it at that if my character said no.

The same for gay testimony. Make it know by commenting or asking once. If my character responds negetively, then accept that for what it is and move on with the task at hand.

I agree with all of that. In fact I love lesbians as well. I often create female characters and they are all lesbian. Hell... I'm lesbian! I'm just trapped in a man's body.

^What about a guy who is openly gay but doesn't remind you of that every ten seconds? Oghren was clearly straight and didn't need to remind you of that.

As I stated in previous posts. I have no issue wit that, as long as it is only initially brought to my characters attention and acknowlegde and then dropped at that point. I don't care that you are gay, nor do I care you told me so. You let it be known, now let's move on.

...nvmd. I'm just repeating myself. If people can't read back 3 posts, then it doesn't deserve a responce.

Anyway since I'm obligated to get involved:

YES there have been openly straight companions. Anyone who says otherwise is flat out incorrect. A few examples:

Oghren
Anders in Awakening
Vega (Although I hear he's romancable now?)

And of course, every companion you don't romance.

Of course its bad for them to insert characters just for the sake of inserting a token gay, but lets remember the Bioware writers aren't stupid. They don't go "Hmm.. Looks like we need to fill the gay quota..." If its done it'll be done well.

I wouldn't mind having a gay male companion, especially if he didn't flirt with my male or tested more to see if my male is gay or straight. like leliana with a female toon, she was a lot more tactful then anders(who I think never should've been bi in the first place since he wasn't in awakening)

What an educated opinion! People never say they are straight and then later reveal they also have feelings for their own gender. That never EVER happens!!! What an astute observation.

You know what I'm not even sure why I opened this thread. Loling so hard at everyone complaining that gay people are getting shoved down their throat. It really must be HORRIBLE to have to see people of a sexual orientation that isn't yours. I mean, I really feel for straight people because it must suck SO MUCH to have all these gay couples running around. Gay people never ever have to deal with that problem! Wow, it must suck that occasionally a character of the same sex flirts with them. Isabella flirts with you, I don't see people all pissy over that.

Do I get pissed when a girl flirts with me IRL? No, I move the **** on with my life.

Eh.  Anders was not openly straight.  Did you hear him EVER ONCE declare that he liked women and ONLY women?  I'll readily grant that his portrayal in Awakening is what most people would register as 100% straight.  But it is also true that he is COMPLETELY SILENT on the issue: at no point anywhere in Awakening did he either state that he was not attracted to men, OR that he was ONLY attracted to women.  I've known enough bisexual people in my lifetime who, for one reason or another, "passed" as straight to people who did not know them that I can easily look at Anders in Awakening and in DA2 and think that he was canonically bisexual in both games.

I don't remember any of those characters specifically stating that they were only attracted to the opposite gender. In fact the only openly straight Bioware character I can think of is Jack, who explicitly states that she only wants a sexual relationship with a male Shepard.

I love how all the people who keep bringing up how they're totally fine with gay people but just don't want it shoved in their face/reminded every 10 seconds are completely oblivious to the heteronormative reality we all live in. Hetero people can and do talk about their sexuality directly or indirectly all the time, and nobody takes any notice of it. A homosexual or bisexual person can just reference their orientation indirectly by pointing out someone they have a crush on...or, Gods forfend, by flirting with that someone...and suddenly it's all "OMG WHY ARE THEY SHOVING IT DOWN MY THROAT OMG!"

I do have to wonder how many of the guys in this forum hit on women and ever, EVER take a minute to wonder if the women they hit on feel like those guys are shoving their heterosexuality down the women's throats.  It amounts to the same thing, but hey, straight male privilege, yo.

I don't have a problem with any of the romance options. You can reject those that you don't like. Or you can enter a little story if you do. It's optional. That's the beauty of it.

Or you could not do a crappy portrayal of that charcter, where the dialogue options are the equivalent of a crayon join the dots exercise. You know, where you actually have to make a specific moves to initiate things with a particular character over time, like Leliana in DAO.

Just going to put that wild, crazy idea out there, before people get their moral superiority panties in a twist.

Spare me.  What you're talking about is NOT what people are talking about when they whine about having TEH GAY shoved in their face...The latter is PURE homophobia espoused by the "I don't have an issue with gays but..." crowd and has nothing whatsoever to do with poor characterization.

What you're talking about is that. What everyone else is talking about is don't do a crap job with it, or did people give a crap that Zeveran flirted with every male warden? No, because he's a promiscuous person by nature, that's not entailed in every character, regardless of alignment.

But, yeah homophobia, please tell me again how oppressed you are. I want to know all the imagined slights and prejudice people have against you because of your orientation, we'll just ignore fact that people can be irritating idiots trumpeting whatever social prejudice as their banner.

When in actual fact, the vast majority simply don't give a fuk, as long as it's done properly.

Heh, just imagine if a gay companion...
-Followed his husband into the Deep Roads because he couldn't let him go
- Asked the player to fix him up with a new boyfriend during his personal quest
- Constantly made crude sex jokes
- Hit on every male companion in the party, even the old guy
- Asked the player for relationship advice after his second husband left him too

When Oghren does it, he's the "players' favorite." If a gay companion did it, he'd be lambasted for bringing up his sexuality every ten seconds. Go figure.

Whether or not a character has a poor portrayal is independent of the sexual orientation of the character. Or at least, *should* be.

I support a non-romanceable gay character. All of the best Bioware characters are usually the ones whose pants you can't get into.
