Given all the lion motifs in Orlesian heraldry, you would think so.
I figured those were just reeeaaaallllllyyyy fabulous house cats.

Yes. There was an Orlesian folk-hero who had an entire armor crafted in the image of lions, while MotA had lion statues.
Though I can't say you'd really find lions in Thedas in a natural environment, considering A) much of Thedas has been "civilized" and

Lions have too much pride they will eventually attack you people who raised them were attacked by them
That's not entirely true. There's a video on youtube of a guy playing with full grown wild lions that he's been around since their birth.
See here. To go into detail, Kevin Richardson was accepted into a pride of lions. There are still dangers, obviously, as there have been times where he's been bitten or scratched, but lions tend to scratch others in the pride all the time so he's being treated the same way. The bite taught him to get a feel for when things are right and wrong on when he should interact with them.
But otherwise, it's not strictly accurate to say they'll always turn on you.

A pet ghast would be fun, but I hesitate calling anything a pet that knows how to make clothes and dress itself. That implies a great degree of intelligence.
I see the PC/ghast relationship as more of a "pack leader/subordinate" situation. If not "pet," how about "servant"?

What if you could equip the ghast with a pirate hat? Or one of those red bandanas that figure into every pirate film in existance?

Nah, just give us a leash we can put on one of our companions.
Romance Zevran. He's into kinky s*** like that.
Mabari are war dogs, and can be tamed. I'm not sure the same can be said about a wolf.
And the only thing remotely close to a lion that I can recall is when someone in the Circle drew a picture of a Templar being eaten by a tiger named Ser Pounce-a-lot.

As for the topic, A Mabari is superior to a Wolf in virtually everyway. Like seriously, they are stronger, bigger, faster, more fierce, smarter, and can actually be trained. A wolf is a step down. In our world, Wolves are far more dangerous than a domesticated Dog in everyway. The same holds true in DA with the exception of the Mabari, who are quite literally at the top of the food chain in the canine family.
To choose a Wolf over a Mabari would be like choosing a Dragon over a Jet. You are choosing the lesser.
