I usually play a mid-close range character, even the bonus weapon I choose is not a Sniper Rifle yet Garrus has always used a Sniper Rifle (apparently even as a child).
There was no reason why Shepard would win it for me.

Like Garrus said when you shoot the bottle, just up the challenge!

They never do but Garrus probably knows he would win anyway, he's better at calibrating "big" guns than Legion and I'm pretty sure Legion is pretty good.

I love it how Legion is shocked by getting outcalibrated by Garrus! One of my favrite crew interactions. It's also a good experience for Legion to bring back to the Geth imo. Legion and the geth needed an experience where they notice that even if they think they are damn good at everything they won't always be the best or superior to an organic.

Because Garrus is AWESOME. You want to keep his confidence up, let him think he can keep teasing your shooting skills. Keeps him motivated. I do it every time and the one time I didn't do it I felt like a horrible person.

Garrus is awesome and thus doesn't need this to continue being awesome.

After his home planet is in flames?  The safety of his own family in question?  His comrades in arms dieing by the millions every passing day?  The very possible extinction of the galaxy?  Nah he was pretty shook up by it all.

A win, no matter how seemingly insignificant, can brighten spirits in dark times like that.

It's like my little brother - I used to kick his ass on the basketball court by as much as I could - break him, make him feel terrible... talk trash - all that... And then he started taking it to me, dunking on me. It was great. He earned that ****... Took him a long ways and all thanks to me being a dick. you're welcome lil bro...

Because my Shepard is an Engineer who isn't as practised with a sniper rifle. She can get a good headshot if her target kindly stays still long enough, but a small, moving target high up in the air? Nnnnnnope. I usually give different personalities and skills to my PCs when playing them, so my main Shep is an amateur sniper compared to Garrus.

With my infiltrator Shepard Garrus lost, with my sentinel (sniper rifle as main weapon) Garus lost but only just, however with my engineers Garrus always wins.

The first time I missed,I was role playing and I am not the best sniper. A Good one,but I prefer other weapon styles. After that I do it because it is hilarious and it is not a bad thing to let a friend enjoy themselves and feel good about themselves. Especially when the issue is as trivial as a shooting bottle contest.

Now I'm curious what people would have answered had there been a scene with Miranda asking "Does my butt look big in this?"

Honesty isn't always the right choice.

Not saying that my Shep can't shot a weapon, but he can't make his sniper rifle dancing.

... And there are people who have seen him dancing.

Think this was one of the mayor problems with the characters in the game.
Playing as Shepard I never felt like one of the gang, You're always over-analyzing every situation for the best possible outcome that'll shape who your "friends" will become.
Shepard is not a friend, he/she's an overprotective parent with a mad scientist God complex, playing sims.
Even when I'm out having a drink with Garrus during the citadel dlc I unconsciously try to hook him up with some lady friend so he'll have someone to be with once I'm gone.
Or trying to prevent half the squad from tearing each other apart like some kindergarten teacher.
So **** you and your feelings Garrus! I'm done being your Mom. Shepard is going to take this shot for Shepard.

My Shepard would have let him win, but she's an adept, I really doubt she can handle a sniper rifle. I am surprised no one died.

This is simple - should we REALLY shoot by ourself - there would not be a question. But there is no competition. You press the button and you win for sure. Not fair a slightest. So, intentionally loose is just restoring fairness, nothing more.

I wonder how many people in this thread that are stating "dishonesty" and "patronising" as their defence of why they WOULD beat Garrus are actually people that simply can't bear the thought of losing, no matter what the situation.

Case in point. I once watched the husband of a friend of mine playing a board game with their seven year old daughter. It was a simple game, something about penguins and ice flows, designed with kids in mind. Watching, it quickly became apparent that he was playing for keeps, employing tactics that the little girl couldn't hope to match. I just looked at him and said "Dude..." and shook my head sadly.

It's not that he's a bad person. He's just used to getting his way and winning. A character flaw, if you will, that even transcended his desire to make his daughter happy. He tried to justify it to me later with very similar arguments to some of those I see here regarding Garrus.

So, to those of you who didn't let Garrus win, all I can do is

to say "Dude....." and shake my head sadly.

In my playthrough, I let him win. The scene isn't, imo, so much about Shepard besting or triumphing over her friend, as it is about two friends enjoying a rare moment of peace and camaraderie. They both know what they're capable of, they have both saved the other one countless times against unreasonable odds - they can both make the shot. But it was Garrus who took Shepard out, to show her this one spot on the Citadel, and to take that playful jab. He knows it's all in fun, an ego boost between two skilled fighters - some trash-talking and back-slapping that is only about competition on the surface.

At least, that's how I approached it.

When I played soldier, I made the shot. If I play through as a Biotic class, I'll miss it.

But then the questions is would Garrus wan't a friend that treats him like a seven year old.

No reason to let him win. He'd probably be upset if he ever found out

Some people really have nothing to do with their time.

This is a really foolish thread.
