Or haven't realized that many males are completely incapable of accepting females on video game covers. Whatever I'm male and I don't have a problem with it and apparently that makes me the odd one out and the game consumer base really does consist of a bunch of man-children who dictate everything that game companies do. My bad.
It's marketing, nothing more. Women and social justice crusaders need not take it personally. The important thing is people will get to play both genders, and since gamers tend to research their purchases they'll only have to read a description on the game to find this out.

The way media depicts different types of people both reflects and affects their position in society.Dave of Canada wrote...
Reversible cover, maybe.
Also what's with video games being the target of solving all of social injustices?
Games are both a symptom and a solution. The same goes for film, television and books.

As for the topic at hand, I would rather have them market the story and role of the main character without getting into much detail about them; I'm supposed to be defining the character, no?

He said rather a game be fun than it try to be progressive.

Really? Was pulling out that one little snippet of my many paragraphs of text just to make that comment really the best course of action?
Is DA2 any better or worse as a game because MHawke is on the cover? No. It is the same game. Your reasons for loving or hating it are the exact same. All I ask is that the game be made with enjoyment for everyone in mind. Not social justice.
Again... I would rather NO ONE be on the cover, or in the promotions. Setting a default protag sets a level of defined nature to the character. Remove that definition, and then no one is offended of receiving preferential treatment and new players can be attracted by the concept of making their own character, one of the chief draws to the series.

So it can't be a good or fun game, without being saddled with social progressive horsesh!te. I'm bemused as to when games became the battleground for social progressives.
What he said was the game should be enjoyable regardless of whatever social concept etc. happens to be present in it. So untwist your panties.

Well, look at all the people who have flocked to this thread to either scoff at the idea and say it wouldn't work, or claim they don't care at all, and the usual suspects who come into these threads to whine about political correctness. Apparently, the idea of women on video game covers is pretty scary to certain people, for whatever reason.
Personally, yeah, it would be great if a female version of the player character was advertised as widely as the male version, but that's because I want to see screenshots and trailers with ingame footage showing the female PC. I will be playing that character, and I want to see her animations and model when the marketing campaign begins. It makes sense, if you're not someone who is so attached to the idea that their biological sex makes them the only ones deserving of video game advertising that they'll flail about wildly at the mere idea of it.

For the same reason female gamers don't want to buy a game with a dude on the front, guy gamers don't want to buy a game with a girl on the front. You don't reach equality by saying "okay, this time we alienate the other side, just to be fair."
What you do is showcase the choice itself. Since that is what will bring both parties to the table.
It is really not complicated - sell the fact that you can be an independent strong woman or an awesome dudebro without alienating either group and you secure the sales of both.

I agree about having no one on the cover but if they're going to put someone on the cover then putting a female on the cover shouldn't "alienate" male players if having a male on the cover doesn't alienate females

If having a female on the cover of a game really makes a company lose so much money then that's a problem that needs to be addressed by the developers and publishers who create games so that consumers aren't scared of women or whatever.
Hahaha. Games, the new battle ground for social equality. I forgot how much rubbish floats about on the DA forums, it's been too long.
It's funny because there is no such thing as social or economic equality. Nor will there ever be.

Then the talk of how sexuality plays in. Not Dragon Age or game romance, but love lives or orientations in general.
