no wait guys and gals I got the one........... The Catalyst. AKA- Space Brat. Ghost boy. Star child.

incredibly well written character. Just prime example of characterization. Wow. Put's everyone on my prior list to shame- truly "High Level" stuff with the Catalyst. Bioware had Top Men working on that character......... Top.Men.

That stopped being funny a year ago.

On topic Andrew Ryan from Bioshock.

There's a difference between being well written and being a lack of written that's ambiguous enough that people are left to fill in the blanks themselves with awesome imaginings. A lot of Bioware antagonists are the later, not the former: Saren has very little actual presence in the story, and the parts of Loghain that warrant the claims for him are almost entirely located behind the wall of optional recruitment, after he stops being the antagonist. In a different disqualifier, the Illusive Man of ME2 was never the antagonist, no matter how much some people disliked him.

I suppose I would pick The Boss from Metal Gear Solid, Snake Eater. She was written in such a way that she had a presence throughout the game, throughout the many other bosses, and her relationship to the protagonist was both antagonistic but so much more.

Master Li from Jade Empire is another one I would consider well written: his exploits are legendary, as is his cunning, and though he isn't the most directly involved figure and is relatively limited, his scheme and ultimate resolution are both well done.

To honestly suggest that he is worthy of the title of "Best Writen antagonist in Gaming" is an insult to those far more worthy of the title and of that there are many. To suggest that Loghain is worthy of the title would be like saying Big Rigs is worthy of the title of "greatest racing sim in gaming".

Solidus Snake.

He wasn't a villain from my perspective though. His reasons for opposing the villains were selfish, and he did raise child soldiers during a civil war, but ultimately his goals were noble.

But at the same time, if he did succed, there's no telling how society would crumble under its own desire to be ruled and the inherent urge we have to submit and unite under a charismatic individual is the only thing that would be our salvation. Anarchy would eventually occur. Democracy is a broken system, and he would've been the catalyst of it all.

A decade and a half since it launched, and MGS2 is still a very relevant and thought-provoking game.

Was waiting for the Glorious Strategist to be mentioned...that some of the staff behind ME3 were involved with that project as well, and yet the final confrontation of ME3 turning out to be so dismally below standards in comparison makes the entire affair even more disheartening.

Kane (CnC, though antagonist doesn't necessarily apply as you can play both sides and neither is the classical good vs bad)

Matter of perspective, indeed. Anton Slavik was also a baws, especially his trolling O'Neill at the very end of TS...

I haven't played a lot of games so my pool is limited, but of those standouts are Loghain and Letho of Gulet. It will be an impressive character that beats out those two.

I give the edge to Letho.  I like an antagonist who could be the protagonist and you wouldn't mind.

Master Li - Jade Empire
Ulysses - Fallout New Vegas
Irenicus - Baulders Gate
Loghain - Dragon Age Origins

What makes a good antagonist I think is , the ability to get under the players skin, face them on equal footing, and to actually be a challenge.

Plus the ability to actually be able to see why they do what they do.

For my money's worth, Lavos was a pretty awesome concept for an antagonist. Alien, both in appearance and behavior, ultimately powerful and not inherently evil, just destructive and manipulative as its very nature.

My all-time favourite antagonist in a game has to be GLaDOS from Portal - the most hilariously passive-aggressive computer ever! Her brilliant dialogue alone is enough to make the game worthwhile. ("Do you think I'm using reverse psychology on you? I mean, seriously, now.")
