Will anybody else try to pretend the movie doesn't exist?

I got the same feeling about "The Last Airbender". You know that horrible movie from M. Night? I'm a huge fan of the TV show it's based on, and when they first announced it, I said to everybody "I've got a bad feeling about this". And look what happened. It was an absolute train wreck. The most epic fail in the history of epic fails. I haven't even seen the movie myself; didn't want to before it came out, and I sure as hell don't want to see it now. If I want to commit suicide, I'll get a gun and blow my own brains out. It's quicker. It's less painful. And not as messy.

I see the movie as a disaster waiting to happen. I've yet to hear of a good movie based on a video game.

You took the words right out of my mouth. Mass Effect has so much nuance and depth that to even try to cram it all into a 2-hour (even 3-hour, which I doubt they'd do -- we're talking about big-budget Hollywood, after all) film is preposterous. And that's without taking into account the personal nature of the journey.

Why watch something medicore, when you have ME1 on your harddrive?
I really can't remember any video game franchise, that produced a decent movie, my expectations are very low. xD

Now, when I bring this sentiment to Mass Effect, I am both excited and wary. I am excited because a movie adaptation has the ability to not only increase the fan base, but expand and already very intriguing fictional universe. On the other hand, I am terrified because it can very wrong. I can just as easily imagine people saying something like: "Yeah, I've seen that movie...I guess it was okay." I would then have to make a lame attempt at arguing why they shouldn't judge the franchise on the bad movie, etc., etc.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see they mentioned it at PAX.
How long do you guys think it'll take until production begins?

Yes, because being able to think for one's self means that they are a drone, as opposed to blindly agreeing with criticism because "that's what all the cool kids are doing".Imperium Alpha wrote...
Sound like denial to me. I ain't one of those denial manics. See BioWare I'm a good drone :3
To wit:
What we know: There's going to be an ME movie.
That's it, that's all we know. But now, it's the end of the world as we know it, because somebody, somewhere, said so. So I ask you, who's the drone?

If it's an independent story, not about Commander Shepherd and Saren, then yes, I'll watch it.
If however, it features Commander Shepherd or Ashley Williams, then I'll pass.
I don't want to see some substandard live version of the characters we know and love.
It's especially complicated with Shepherd, whose appearance, gender and even class will vary depending on personal choices!
I fully expect Shepherd to be some assault rifle wielding biotic god with all the other weapons just to be awesome and male, just so we can have the obligitory "eye candy" scene with either Ashley or Liara (it'll probably be Liara!
Also, as a general rule, movies based on games tend to be awful, without exception.
So that's also causing me hesitation.
Case in point, Paragon Lost.
It was an okay story, but the inconsistencies with established lore and sometimes idiotic storyline points caused me to loose respect for it.
For pity's sake, we have Vega agonizing over whether or not to rescue April and her mother!
He's a big guy and he has his Asari friend with him!
Give her the little one, he can take the big one, problem solved!

@Tilarta: I certainly won't watch the movie if the Commander is called "Shepherd".

I mean, I 100% think the best possible move would involve a female vanguard earthborn Sole Survivor who is gritty and focused on melee, goes romanceless, and believes that being a Spectre is the most important thing.... But come on. That's not going to happen.
And we don't know much about it until they tell us.
I DO tend to like action movies, science fiction, and strong female characters. Any Mass Effect movie will involve that. How good the writing is will be decision-time for me.

Well ok, looks like it's back after all.
Just to clarify, the reason why so many people here think the movie will be an adaptation of ME1 is because that was the last piece of information we got on some discussion panel about, oh, I don't quite remember 1 & 1/2 years ago?
No idea if that info is still accurate but if it is, I'll repeat that I'd rather like it never so see the light of day. An adaptation brings so many obvious problems with it, it's barely possible to type them all in one post.
If they used another story (you could make a great scifi action movie out of Revelation) or a completely new one, I'd be curious.
I still think an ME tv series would be great but it'd need an enormous budget to be any good. Not gonna happen i guess.
