Character flaw. She's not perfect.
Rationale doesn't make racism less racist. I've been in class before where someone told me that he didn't usually like Chinese, but I was okay in his book. Did that make it less racist? Hell no. My uncle told me once that I would be kicked out of the family if I ever married someone who wasn't Chinese. Racist. Years later, he told me that it was okay if I married someone who wasn't Chinese, so long as they were still Asian and weren't Japanese. Racist? Yes. Still racist. Even if I understand that that side of the family lost a hell of a lot to the Japanese. My great grandparents saw unimaginable horrors, and both sides of my family lost the status of aristocracy thanks to the communists as well as the Japanese. Even then, to hate the Japanese for being born Japanese is racism. No matter the rationale, no matter the experience.
It seems to be in our nature to generalise and discriminate. It's up to us how much we want to fight against it. There is no, "Well, it's okay because of _____." It just is. Beyond that, it's for society to judge how acceptable it is.
Our personalities are not black and white. There are shades of grey inbetween. She CAN still feel bad about Liara losing her mother and at the same time, hate what she is. She could also be putting on a front. I mean, it'd be kind of cold not to say anything to that. *shrug* There's no way to make racism less racist. It is what it is. I'm not saying that she's a horrible character that must be destroyed from the face of the galaxy. I'm saying that people have their reasons for disliking her. They are allowed that.
She was a very distinctive individual in 1. And that could go either way. Not everyone is going to like it. There's nothing wrong with conceding that she's a flawed individual. In saying that she changes and grows, that's conceding that she's flawed. Her personality was watered down for the next few games to the point where these traits are less distinguishable- I'm guessing due to fan criticism. Which also isn't fair because there are obviously people who like her. Even if I won't ever use her, I wouldn't want to deny someone who does like her from doing so.

Of course she's not perfect. Hell, I like Ashley. But liking her doesn't mean ignoring her flaws. I'm not an Ashley hater by any means. Unless you mean ME3 Ashley, but that character... Isn't ME1 Ashley.
Exactly. If you can't embrace someone for what they are- all of who they are, you can't truly love them. You're still picking and choosing.

And she is certainly not the bigoted racist others try to portray her.

Ash is not perfect. She is overly suspicious and cynical. I think she is not so much racist as nationalist, though.
And she is certainly not the bigoted racist others try to portray her.
Making fun of someone's appearance has nothing to do with their nationality.

There is far more evidence that proves she isnt. that being said...
Kaiden is still worse imo becase he becomes openly xenophobic and pro human and for those who say that is not his default setting ...then all your saying is he is a weak willed person doesn't have his own beliefs and is easily manipulated.

Pointing out that Ashley is NOT racist is a lost cause her on BSN it appears. You people either don't understand what racism is or never paid any attention at all to the Ashley character.
+1 totally agree and it Is the perfect reason why this topic is a lost cause.
Thanks Bioware you created an awesome "person" with Ashley in general in Me1 and made her even better in every way in ME3 I don't think much of ME3 as a whole but I will admit you hit a home run with her and her makeover

In fact, it doesn't even take first hand experience. It just takes a bit of empathy. I know plenty of friends who stand up against it and haven't had to deal with it in their everyday lives.
And again, saying that Kaidan CAN be come openly xenophobic and pro-human ALSO applies to Ashley because they designed the characters to be swayed by the personality you give Shepard. So I guess she's weak-willed too? Oh, wait, no.. that's already in her line of thought. I'm sorry, but the people who can accept her for who she is are the true fans deserving of her. Again, just read back to what others have said.
