If I play manshep, Ashely (LI) lives, if Femshep, Kaiden lives even though Liara is my LI. I like Kaiden's scenes in ME3 more, especially when he cooks steaks in the apartment and when Femshep calls him her brother after the reconcile after Citadel2.

Kaidan cooks???  Wow, I have got to find a Citadel content guide.  My Citadel party had wonderful dialogue but all friendly stuff.  No romance related items save for Kaidan waking up with my FemShep before she checks out the aftermath.  Then they return to the Normandy.  :(  No James pull ups (he makes eggs no matter what I do) and no James flirtation (whether I invite Kaidan or not).  :(

The pullups and stuff happen if you invite him to your apartment, not at the party itself.

And for the biotics 'Reave' is a awesome skill to use biotic explosion.

Although, why even we need her in ME3? We have already human soldier, Vega.

Use incendiary grenade + concussive shot. She can detonate her own combo and take down a Banshee on her own that way on Insanity. She's also as deadly and has the same obscene range as Garrus with a SR, which a lot of people seem to forget about her availible loadout.

I understand your resentment towards her personality, but every single ME3 squad member is very powerful in their own right.

Kaidan cooks for you when you invite him to your apartment on his private date. The same is for James, his flirting (only with single Femshep) and pull ups happen on his private date.

Hmmmmmmmmmm.  Something tells me I threw the party too soon.  There is a lot of stuff people are referencing with which I have had no experience.  I don't know how to fix it on the ones I have played through already.

You can still invite or meet them after the party, as long as you do it before the Cronos station ^_^ You can only do the party once though.

Oh this again.

There is only one logical choice and thats Kaidan Alenko.

I mean seriously. I dont know how it works in military (always compared Alliance to ST), but imagine you are a soldier and tell your supervisor - oh hey just saved a mere soldier and let an experienced biotic, field medic, technician, officer/staff lieutenant, head of marine detail, my second in command and someone you handpicked to be part of the crew to die, so are you okay with that?

Oh yeah and send me another Staff lieutenant I need someone to take over my marine detail - because Ashley is only gunnery chief. I just dont see how you can save Ash over Kaidan. For me it´s like you let Spock die in order to save your head of security.

And I love Ashley character. I think they are both best written character in the series. And I really love the completion of her family story if she dies saving aliens on Virmire. She always how hard is to be Williams in Alliance thanks to what her grandfather did. So if someone from their family become a hero for Alien , I think that´s awesome story. And well no one can

Honestly, I never RP Virmire like that. For me the decision always comes down to the fact the bomb has to go off. So Shepard always goes to protect the bomb. I switch up sending Kaidan or Ash with the bomb in every playthrough.

Well, I always believed that BioWare's intention here in fact was to show that Shepard did not makes this decision based on tactical reasoning, but really because of why most players made their pick themselves.

For my first ME experience, it was the first time Shepard showed a crack in the elite soldier foundation, when Ashley calls him on saving her over Kaidan. She pretty much says what Reikilea wrote, and Shepard mutters "I... just couldn't".

Doesn't that only apply to a paragon answer and romanced LI?

I think that dialogue options exists to let players RP Shepard along those lines. But there's also the renegade "professional soldier" line.

I think anyway, been over a year since I last played ME1.

No, of course you are right. That's why I wrote "in my experience".

I made that decision out of purely emotional reasons, and I was glad to be able to have Shepard acknowledge that.

Ah. I was responding to your first paragraph. I think BioWare leave it up to the player to decide whether its an emotional or logical decision. Which is of course great and leads to better RP potential.

I understand. I am way to analytical in playing rpg. :D Not matter what i do I have to see reason. So I always send Kaidan with bomb, because I always thought that he as a technician would have this kind of expertise. And Ashley with Salarian because they would use her firepower and battle skills.

Yeah, I was being too absolute with that first paragraph. No harm done.

Now that I think about it this way (unless you're in a romance with Kaidan), Ashley is the emotional choice and Kaidan the practical one. Kaidan is the higher ranking officer, and while I've never been in the military, I believe protocol here is pretty clear. It's of course tricky to reason with who's where, because the bomb is always ensured to go off, no matter how you decide. They could have even taken it to the extreme and make that a factor, too...

I can justify this both ways. What you said of course, and the reverse (Salarians have firepower, they need technical and biotic support and co-ordination, where as Ash has more hands-on experience with actual explosives and bombs as opposed Alenko's theoretical knowlege).

Honestly its just a way of keeping the game fresh. I have three PTs with Ash alive, and 2 with Kaidan alive. Just makes sense to keep mixing it up.

Yep. I agree. That´s why Virmire is amazing part of the game. Definitely of the most powerful and emotional moments in  games.

That´s exactly the reason why they warn peple about fraternisation, to prevent emotional response in moments like this. However, but I understand if there is a chance you love her, you just cant let her die. And there is the chance for this another awesome story about survivors guilt.

But love subplots never worked for me. (ok maybe Casablanca) I dont do love, I do reason. So for me it will be hard to save Ashley. My head would protest.  And I want her to become alien hero.

I always knew I was going to have Shepard save Kaidan, as an emotional decision because he was romancing him. But when I played Virmire, I sent Ash with the Salarians while Kaidan was with me - the Salarians were pretty much wiped out and Kaidan was with the bomb. It seemed logical to make sure the bomb would go off and a huge risk to leave it to try and rescue like one person. Also my Shepard is a soldier so Kaidan's biotic skills balance out my squad so it became a logical decision and an emotional one from my perspective.

I've never seen Ash's character development in ME2 and 3 but I feel she has a good arc from Eden Prime to Virmire. And then she posthumously gets the medals so she's remembered as brave and honourable.

I always kind of thought Salarians are more into tech stuff. STG always reminded my more of a espionage group than a soldiers force. Well it´s maybe because of their lithe build. I wish we had more salarians in game to prove this, which is too bad because they are my favourite alien race. That´s the reason why I thought they would need more firepower.

Both Kaidan and Ash are marines. So both of them has experience on field, but I think Ash is better with guns and Kaidan with tech and electronics - so bombs would definitely be his expertise.

Just a matter of interpretation. As long as I don't force the RP into a huge skewing of the game-verse to bring out the metagame outcome I want, I'm happy.

I find it really boring that people choose exactly the same option in every single playthrough anyway. For me half the fun of the ME games is trying out all the different interactions and character and story combinations. That's whenever someone asks me whether they should pick Ash or Kaidan on their second or later PTs, I always tell them to pick the one they haven't picked yet.

I always write this in threads related to Kaidan (which you do frequent most times as well), that I actually regarded him as Shepard's best friend.

Accordingly, I was kinda bummed out by how poorly Kaidan is represented posthumously. That's why standing with Ashley in front of the memorial and remembering Kaidan is one of my favourite scenes. It's sad that the other two games confusingly imply, that Manshep has no interest in Kaidan unless it's either romantic or purely practical.

Doesn't Miranda ask who you left behind on Virmire?

I dunno, I always import saves 1->2->3

I think ME2 automatically chooses the opposite sex as the one saved and also saved from the beacon on Eden Prime, but I think that's meant to be standard unless you do the same-sex trick.

Never liked Kaiden at all. Ashley has always been my favorite squad mate. I play power based classes mostly, and I think she is a great addition as a squad mate. I don't need another biotic. Just give that girl the biggest gun you've got (Typhoon in particular) and let her go to work. If you have her and Javik on your team, everything under insanity is child's play. (again - I play as biotic/powers based classes - vanguard mostly and adept.)
