When I have already initiated a relationship, does thta mean I HAVE to picvk the heart icon every time it comes up or the relastionship ends? Because I've seen a bunch of dialog I've never picked because the heart option was present.

I ask because in one playthrough where I was trying to romance fenris, his romance triggered by the consumation scene never did and I ended up going with someone else.

You don't have to pick every heart option to get the romance, but some flirt options you have to take or the romance won't trigger. It's tricky, because you obviously don't know which flirt options are required.

Rule of thumb is that none of the flirt options in Act 1 actually do anything, so they are safe to choose or leave. Act 2 has the crucial dialogue moments. I think it's wise/required to choose the heart options in the catching up quests at the beginning of the act and the Questioning Beliefs that will trigger once rivalry/friendship has reached the 50% point. If everything goes like it's supposed to, the romance should trigger then. After the hooking up scene in Act 2, you are not required to choose any flirt options to keep the romance active. Same goes for Act 3. Only exception is the second Questioning Beliefs quest, in which the romance will be brought up by the companion and you can/should confirm your feelings for them.

As for Fenris specifically, his romance tends to be buggy, so you could have been unlucky. If you want to go for Fenris, it's best to not flirt with any of the other companions in Act 2, and that you do NOT sleep with Isabela, even for fun. For some reason that scares Fenris off and you will not be able to romance him. If you have flirted with him and his romance has triggered, you should get the consumation scene after you have done his Questioning Beliefs quest. It does not matter whether you do this before or after A Bitter Pill, but I've heard that in (rare?) instances the consumation scene doesn't trigger when you do QB after Bitter Pill. If you have done QB before BP, choosing the heart option in the aftermath scene of BP in Hawke's estate will trigger the consumation scene. If you do QB after BP, Fenris will show up at the Hawke mansion when you go there, and you then get the option to "consumate" his romance or turn him down.

I hope this has clarified things a bit. Good luck with Fenris' romance. It's definitely worth it, imo!

Fenris romance is tricky, there are some guides around to get it to trigger. Most of the other romances let you choose just a few hearts but Fenris and Sebastian's need very specific decisions to get picked

Thanks for the help, ren. I did romance him once before as a warrior (wasn't that fond of it) but I wanted to do it as a mage. I feel like that would be much more emotionally resonant. Oh if only bioware would include a way to play their games as nothing but dating sims.
