Why not pixel "nude" models rather than force them to dress in underwear?

Ok, so I get that full frontal nudity is out of the question, but what I don't get if why the models have to be dressed in underwear even if you strip them bare naked in the charachter screens. I mean, wouldn't be better to have them completely naked on the inventory screen and just pixel out the "sensitive parts"? Even "The Sims" did this and Sims has an age-rating for children which is something DA  does not have (nor the majority of Bioware's RPGs for that matter). I'm not saying we can't have underwear in the game, but why not have them as a part of an equippable set undergarment that can potentially add perks/enhancements etc. Kinda bugs me that the protagonist always has the same set of underwear in my games that s/he never seems to change and that are forceably equipped no matter what..

Correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to remember that Saint's Row also opted for this solution and "pixelled" their player charachter models rather than forced undergarments on them.

The sims rating is Teen, and I'm not sure that pixelation would work in a cutscene. Not that underweartastic sex scenes work that well either, but I can't imagine they couldn't come up with decent camera angles and such that just show the barest hints of parts. That actually would be far sexier than full frontal anyway.

Are you arguing there would be a technical benefit? Or this for an artistic vision?

This is seriously an issue for you? The 0.02% duration of the game where you get to see what your character looks like under the armour?

I'm sure the devs have better things to do than model naked characters so that people can strip out the pixels with nudity mods...

That might be an interesting idea...or they could do what they do in the first Austin Powers and have censorship using the setting.

I know this conversation about nudity has been going on for quite some time, but it would be interesting if BioWare/EA could put optional censoring in future games. No nudity does not necessarily make a good game with a good story. I mean, look at Shadows of the Damned.

That would just look awful and out of place. What's the point, anyway? Changeable underwear? Which add enhancements? Haha, what??
Now I picture the Warden asking Sandal to enchant his underpants...

Why not nudity like in TW2.This is game for adults isn't it.If you are going to put romance and sex scenes in the game, show it like it's real or just skip it.

This. And on a side note, the romance scenes should be one of the last things Bioware needs to worry about in the game.

EDIT: And by romance scenes I mean love making scenes.

Pixelling would be silly as hell. Saints Row gets away with it because it rejoices in sillyness.

Personally, I'd have an unarmoured character be wearing clothes. There's no good reason for you to be running around in your underwear - it's not as if you wouldn't be wearing a whole bunch of stuff under your armour. Of course, this could cause problems for romance scenes, unless they were prepared to spend more resources, but that doesn't bother me.

if they do the romance scens like in DAO they should do the camera angles that shows they are naked but doesn't show it at the same time. they should do that or go all the way the underwear thing is annoying

Cutscenes are a whole different kettle of fish, and that's actually yet another reason why I am propagating for the "pixelated" alternative. Because that would force the cutscenes (I suppose you are implying the "romantic" scenes here? ;)) to be made in a different, more "realistic" manner. That is to say scenes in which the charachters don't "compulate fully dressed" as in the previous DA installments, but rather are shown in a more suggestive and tasteful manner (think more like the romance scenes in Mass Effect 1). This also works for non-romance scenes where charachters, for whatever reason, are supposed to be naked (E.g. tossed in a dungeon, stripped of ALL of their belonings). There the camera could just pan over the charachters in such a way that no "detrimental" parts a shown full frontal, So no, there wouldn't need to be any pixellationin the cutscenes, only in the actual gameplay, where full frontal views could be rendered inevidable so to speak.

The problem is also the stigma of nudity, I remember the problems that happened with the Hot Coffee hack in Grand Theft Auto. I know The Witcher has more detailed images in the game, but how mainstream is the game compared to a BioWare game and do they want to go through the "Porn Simulator" label that was part of Mass Effect 1.

But Johnson was awesome!

But I agree, a few cleverly placed camera angles and the nudity vs clothing thing would be a non-issue. A romance scene with Implied nudity (mixed with the right atmosphere) is just as effective (if not more so) than full frontal ****** 'n' arse.

Because every time a video game character is nude, the ESRB slaughters a kitten.

What good would that do? If they made it like The Sims like the OP suggested, stripping away the picels wouldn't do anything.  Believe it or not, Sims characters have no genitals underneath the blurring field.

I don't particularly care. If I want to see naked people, I browse the internet. And the scenes where showing nakes bodies makes sense are so short that I don't think it really matters whether we see underwear or pixels.
Pixelated body parts would probably just make me laugh.

The only time i've seen this done with pixels was in MGS and the end result looked silly. The format of romance scenes in DA2 was better than DAO, Just build up to it and fade to black and rejoin the PC and LI afterwards. No need for gratuitous T&A.
