'Just Friends' option

What ever happened to just being friends? Why does it have to devolve into sex? Jack doesn't need someone to bang her to show she can trust someone; heck, this is a multiple gang rape victim, the last thing she equates sex with is intimacy! I'd say she needed the exact OPPOSITE. Someone who was there for her, without conditions. Who wasn't trying to get into her pants. But nope. It's either convince her you care with your mighty Shepards Crook or she sits in the cargo hold alone.
I think it'd be nice if we had a 3rd option to go along with "romance" (ie, bang like bunnies. Let's face it, it's not really romance; where are the candles, rose petals, and Isaac Hayes music?) or "whatever, friends, yeah, now shut up and sit in your corner of the camp until I'm ready to talk to you" options.
I would find it hilarious as all get out if there was a random chance for your prospective love interest to say, "I'm so glad we're JUST FRIENDS!" with a little hug and a kiss on the cheek. You know, for that added realism <G>.

You know romances aren't compulsory last time I checked. There's always let's be 'just friends'. But in real life when that happens someone always gets burned.
I don't really agree with that statement, it would be nice though if when a charater hits on you you had the option to let them down gently.

I actually kinda like the ninja-mancing, it keeps me on my toes and makes sure I pay attention in regards to what dialogue options I use when talking to them.

I think all of Bioware's games allow you to be "just friends" perfectly well.
Anders in DA2 doesn't you lose like 15 points, but tbh who want to be friends with that muppet anyway.

You lose 10 points, but so what? Even with that hit, it's possible to get him up to 100% Friendship twice over in Act 1 alone.DinoSteve wrote...

But the mechanic of the Friendship/Rivalry points doesn't have anything to do with it. Mass Effect doesn't have any sort of visible relationship-scoring system, but OP still feels he can't be friends with Jack.

But shouldn't he understand if you turn him down because you don't have the same sexual persuasion as him?
If a Gay man hits on a Straight man without knowing hes straight, would that gay man be angry at the straight man because hes straight?

How should I know? Gay men are not a hivemind. Some people have a thick skin and can handle being shot down, some get their feelings hurt.DinoSteve wrote...

But how the relationship is measured in a mechanics sense is irrelevent to the topic at hand. The example OP is complaining about is from Mass Effect, which doesn't even have a Friend/Rival system.

Yes! Because he was rejected there are always negative feelings when rejecting someone when genuine feelings are involved. For me Anders having genuine feelings is debatable because I get the feeling he's just using you as a shield against the Templars. Even so he feels like he's an idiot, for making a fool of himself in front of you.
Feelings are the same across the board they are not logical. Have you ever gone 'hmm my friend just stole my most prized possession. What are my options be angry or walk away and be upset? No they are a reactive mindset, so they are NOT logical. They do not discriminate just because a homosexual hit on a hetersexual and didn't know it.

You flirt five second with him and he tells you how your relationship is doomed....
You just break his very sensible heart , he's a very dramatic guy.
Besides people don't like being rejected , it doesn't matter if the reason are logical.(And I don't like you this way ...is very logical)
I'm not sure sexual orientation have anything to do with this ...
It's like saying a hetero female rejected a male , it's logical the guy is angry because he's a man ...

Second, it's super obvious in BioWare games when a dialogue option has romantic intent. Just stay away from those lines and you'll be fine. My femShep was best buddies with Garrus with no romance going on. My female warden was good friends with Alistair and there was no romance. Friendship is an option that's entirely supported in these games.

If you "accidently" got into a relationship with Zevran, Liara or Jack, then you clearly weren't paying attention to what you were saying to them.

Accidently getting into the Liara romance isn't that strange actually as she has a bugged (or even several, can't remember) dialogue option. If you choose a certain rejection dialogue (renegade I think) you enter a romance anyway.

Two things. First, Jack was never raped, I have no idea how you got it into your head that she was. She voluntarily slept around a lot because she was messed up, but no one ever actually held her down and forced her. She's the most powerful human biotic there is, do you really think anyone would be able to make her do something she doesn't want to?

Jack WAS raped at least two times as it is explicitely said in the game. When she tells you about her escape from Pragia on the Normandy she mentiones being abused by the crew who found her floating in space in the escape pod (or whatever she used to escape, I don't remember the details). When you speak to her in the Darkstar club on the Citadel she tells you that she was attacked in a bathroom on Purgatory (I think by other inmates). She killed some before the others got her - she may not say the word but she was raped back then. She got her revenge on those men afterwards, but obviously couldn't handle all of them when she was attacked.

So unless you just click without reading the dialouge options, you should have absolutely no problem avoiding the romance.

Not always. Leliana for instance thinks you're committing to her when you ask her about her relation to Marjolaine.and say you're sorry it ended the way it did, or that she didn't deserve Leliana. I must be hitting on friends all the time if those are common come-ons =)HolyAvenger wrote...
I don't understand ninjamancers. The game gives you a pretty clear idea you're heading into a romance.

Not being into women myself, I wouldn't know, so I'm forced to ask: is there some unwritten rule that says only girlfriends are allowed to be beautiful and every other woman in the world is a lumpy bag of garbage with a fish head?

As for ninja-mances, I've never had that happen, though my husband did while he was playing through ME1. Hilarious.

OP, I'm not really sure what you're asking for, here. I thought the default if you weren't romancing a companion but were still playing through their content was friendship? Are you simply asking for deeper friendships?

Liara backed off when I said I wasn't interested, but Ashley needs to take a sexual harassment seminar. Thankfully, after Virmire, that was a non-issue.
"No" means "I'm going to leave you behind to get nuked if you don't keep your hands to yourself".

Thing is, this the story writers did NOT write it that way. It's a bug, not a quirk of Leliana's characer. So it hardly counts.

Hehe... well, there are some women who are laid-back about that kind of thing, but others might not appreciate their boyfriends casually commenting on the attractiveness of other women.
There are also some women who might take being told they're attractive as a come-on when it's only meant as a compliment. Of course, it depends on the context, and on the woman.
As far as Leliana's "ninja-mance" is concerned, I've heard that it's a bug.
