Ash and Vega are meant for each other.

Ash and Vega are one of the worst pairings in the game, Vega was seriously the only person BW could find to hook Ash up with?

I think all potential non-Shep Normandy pairings are pretty bad.

Well, except Gabby/Ken, but they were literally made for each other.

Garrus/Tali works for me, they're both just so awkward that it's perfect.

I actually think Vega & Ashley are a better pairing than Garrus and Tali, although I did enjoy the scene where Shepard catches Garrus preparing to calibrate her. Ashley & Vega seem like they have a lot more in common than Team Dextro, particularly when you consider that Team Dextro didn't exactly get along well in the first game. Garrus was pretty much a d-ck to her in elevator conversations.

Tali & Kal'Reegar would have made more sense IMO, if he had a cameo in ME3.

Agreed, I do like the Garrus/Tali pairing.

Ash/James just doesn't seem right to me, I guess BW thought that was the only one they could do because James is military as well? Who knows I guess.  I always romanced Ash myself so it never got to that point where her and James were doing anything.

Well, when I YouTubed the scene, it definitely did feel awkward, I'll give it that.

Seriously though, I got the impression that that pairing happened because "they're both dextro" and "they've been with Shepard in all three games" which are pretty bad reasons for romance. I always felt like they had more of a sibling-type relationship than anything else (which is exactly what they do have if you're romancing one of them; in that situation their pre-Earth conversation is something that seems much more fitting and better-written).

Either way, though, Joker/EDI win the "worst romance" award. That one's downright creepy.

You know what pairing I really thought might work? Bear with me here. Vega/Cortez. Vega is really, really REALLY weird about sleeping with Shepard. And seems a bit over-compensatory when it comes to the flirting.. Okay, okay.. I roll my eyes every time people make up pairings too that aren't of the characters' orientation, but Vega really struck me as.. well.. not serious about the flirting. In more ways than just his career being at stake.

The Ash hate wouldn't irritate me so much if it wasn't based on a misconception. The eternal claim that she is racist. Her own writer stated point blank on several occasions that this is a false assumption. I mean, seriously, Shepard picks up a group of strays at the inter-galactic bus stop, and a senior NCO is not supposed to have security concerns? It's like the article I once read by some politician over in the US that compulsory voter registration was racist, when it's something that most first world democracies have had for years. It's such an illogical, overblown claim that it's impossible to take seriously.

Honestly, I've actually heard some of the reasons given by people for hating her from former friends in real life. It's left me head-scratching at the narrow-mindedness of humans toward their own, sometimes. Like when Adoremei says that Ashley is very 'military' and that every aspect of her personally offends him. It's a statement that is, ironically, extraordinarily offensive.

I for one support James/Ashley pairing, just so she doesn't feel left out when I am femShep. I actually would prefer Kaidan/Ashley paring, but that's a little harder to pull off given that Virmire can't be easily retconned away.

Still given the genre and the setting, the fact that we could potentially have 4 couples (Shep/Liara/Traynor/Cortez/Kaidan, James/Ashley, Garrus/Tali, Gabby/Ken) on the same ship is ridiculous. What kind of navy is the Alliance running anyway?

I have to agree.  Personally I never saw Ash as racist, and the first time I ever heard about it was from these forums.  I just saw her as being Alliance first and she just distrusted any race other than humans because she felt humans would be the ones to put human interests first.  She's also very strong willed, stubborn, and takes her job very seriously.  Like you said, I'm really not surprised she had concerns about there being aliens on the ship, but she did get over it.

I guess that rubs people the wrong way because she doesn't come off as "playful" or "friendly" enough or something.

Besides, she did change though and worked with aliens and got over her distrust of other races, so this whole racist stuff I hear when it comes to Ash should be long gone anyways.  Some people just don't want to forget about it I guess.

I don't know how you can even play Mass Effect if you don't like the military.

Practically all of her personality traits I find offensive, personally. She never survives past Virmire on any of my games- even if I made a Renegade go of it. But despite my very vocal dislike for her, I respect her as a character for others to like. Because everyone's different. She's very "military". I just wish that some people didn't get all angry and start defending her tooth and nail because someone says that she has a very obvious personality trait that they don't want to be associated with approving of. So what? Big deal. :) She's not perfect, but isn't that what they like about her? Liking her for all that she is is being more of a fan than cherry picking to make her something greater than she is.

I see what's being insinuated there. :) The statement about disliking practically all of her personality traits and the "military" statement were not connected, as you can see. The "military" comment was in relation as to how she is in general. I never stated that this is why I dislike her. And maybe she would be offended that I don't like her, but nobody here is Ashley, nor do they represent her in any form.

Beats me. Every character in the game represents the military. Vega = Hard nosed officer. Cortez = Organised and regimented pilot. Joker = Arrogant flyboy. Kaidan = Compassionate and competent, experienced officer. Miranda = military intelligence (I'm referring to the personality type, not the affiliation). Jacob = Solid and dependable officer. Anderson = Experienced CO who is usually fatherly and mentoring. The list goes on and on. Even the aliens share traits of this. Hell, the turians are a society who personify militarism. (I won't mention the number of times I've almost called the top shot in the company 'Garrus'....cocky bastard.)

C'mon.  Tali ends up plastered on the floor of a bathroom (and that is with a quiet party).  Traynor worries if she did...anything...embarrassing.  It's all a joke.

I don't do the party until after I've locked in the romance with Ash so I don't run into the flirty thing.  She gets crazy in another way if you go wild party too...only with you (Shepard).  It's a JOKE.

It isn't a joke if it is unromanced playthrough.

In that case Ashley and Vega do hookup. Some dialogue might be played for laughs of course, but the events themselves are 'canon.'

Uh, sorry to say but then so is Shepard waking up with JAVIK IN HIS BED.  Canon schmanon.  It's a joke reel.  A gag reel.  Fanservice freebee.

Yeah pretty much, everything about the Citadel DLC isn't to be taken seriously, and that's perfectly fine with me because the rest of the game is very serious and mostly gloom and doom.

Kal 'Reegar dies. It says so in an E'mail.

And Garrus references the elevator conversations in ME1 and apologizes for them. It's a really neat bit

The more I've played the more I've liked Ash to the point that she is the go-to girl for my Shepard LI about 70% of the time.  She, to me, is an archetype of the perfect woman.  Stong, hot, no-nonsense, and yet feminine.  Now at first I DID think she came off "racist" until I actually considered what she said, what her family history is, how she presents it.  Then I also paid attention to the things she actually said vs how things really WOULD be: humans will always be human-first in any matter of great importance vs alien just as Germans will be Germany first or Americans are America first in all matters that directly and, potentially, negatively impacts their society.  Anything else would be self-destructive and insane.

I'm my own family first if they get pitted AGAINST others and there's going to be a struggle to get by.  That's 100% reality.  That is where she comes from, particularly when you take her family history (and its effect upon her own career) into consideration.  The whole "racist" nonsense becomes nonsensical too when she does things like state a liking for Tali (like a sister) or Garrus or other aliens.

I'm "very military" my whole life and so I LIKE that in a woman.

@Adoramei Except...the military draws precisely that type of person. Family oriented, eager to serve, proud of their culture/civilization, a little cynical, sometimes religious. If that personality type offends you, then I, my battle buddy, brick, section, platoon, company, battalion, regiment, brigade, division and corps all personally offend you...and that's a strange thing to have in the twenty first century. A little while ago I sat down and reviewed all the things that I found offensive. After logically considering it, I realised that I didn't really find anything offensive...just mildly irritating. Hell, I don't even consider a punch to the face an offensive statement anymore...as long as I'm allowed to rebutt.

Likewise, you insinuate that I like her despite or because her being racist. Nah, I like Wrex, Javik and Garrus despite/because racism. Ash is a loyalist. Learn the difference.

That's exactly the reason why I like Ash so much as well.  She comes off as a very strong woman, stubborn, and no-nonsense, but once you peel back that hard shell of hers shes got a sweet side that likes poetry.  Her being sexy is just icing on the cake really.  I like that she has that soft side that only Shepard really sees.

I see her as Shep's equal in terms of them both being strong, stubborn, and no-nonsense, which is why when they are in a relationship they have ups and downs because they are so passionate.

I recently left the Air Force (20 years) and tried to go to the army (wanted infantry) but because of the draw-down, they are bringing a LOT of active duty people back into the Reserves and Guard so...no room at the inn.  I can still easily pass their PT test easily enough.  That was even though I was a major in the AF and was more than willing to go enlisted if it would get me in.
