Lol really?

With that "waste" definition clearly Kaidan shouldn't have been included in the game then because his survival rate was the lowest of everyone in the trilogy... oh and only 45% met Wrex, clearly resources should have been allocated more to a character who was there 100% of the time. Oh wait there are already people complaining Liara got to much attention...

Lets be fair anyone who says FemShep was a waste of resources is clearly just trying to troll (badly).

I think it's because he's on the cover or something like that.

And all the other marketing. Also the fact that when you load up ME1 you see options for John Shepard or New ID. If you didn't click on New ID you'd have no idea you could play as a female character (or customize a male character), because it's not like the marketing for ME1 or ME2 ever told you you could.

Shocking revelation: The majority of the fanbase is male and thus far more likely to play a male protagonist. This number is not unsurprising, in fact games that have female protagonists tend to sell less than games that have male ones.

It is kind of sad actually.

I have little faith in this statistic. Perhaps the study was poorly engineered.

the internet is awash with Garrus fangirling.

FemShep pointless? By this logic Skyrim would be pointless. Just look at the achievements.

Not so many play femShep because probably cause so few players of ME are female. According to MCV, only 14% of ME players are female. That's half for what they found for other RPGs. 30% for Elder Scrolls, 31% for Diablo, 35% for Final Fantasy. Also they report it's 20% female for Call of Duty. (reports are here: http://www.mcvuk.com...s/tag/brand-map ) So maybe female players don't like ME because its more of a shooter, or Bioware failed and made people think ME is nothing but a shooter.

Tomb Raider is an anomaly to the rule, it has an incredibly dedicated fanbase who expect Lara to be female. But I can almost gurantee it would have sold better if the protagonist had originally been male. Switching LAra to a male would have been suicide for them though.

No, what was a waste of resources was Jesicca Chobot's God-Awful NPC, ****ty Ashley, Sex Bot EDI, half-****ed storyline of ME3, bad ending, meaningless DLC, bad graphics, ect (cause the list is super long)... Okay done ranting.
Anyway, the reason that why the Femshep ratings are low is because of multiple things.
1. The statistics may be biased in the sense they only come from one or limited sources. Kinda like those 'ending statistics'. I can't find the graph, so this statement may be wrong. If so, I apologize, but the first thing you are taught in statistical fields, is to ALWAYS check that the info is valid.
2. FemShep has been degraded, in the sense that Bioware made her out to be this 'flirty dirty sex fiend'... or something along those lines. At least with BroShep, you aren't auto hitting on Vega. Then you get the point that Shepard's romance options have been cut. Equal romance options to both characters my ****. Femshep doesn't even have the option to save Thane, romance Vega, or convince Jacob to dump 'What's-Her-Face'.
3.[inappropriate comments removed]
4.[inappropriate comments removed]

I'm sure I'll come up with more reasons later. And I know my opinions may be biased, so please feel free to contradict me anytime. Thanks OP for giving me a topic to write on for my final's paper.

Why do people keep insisting that MShep is the "default" when the game offers a gender choice right when you start a new game?

Its not like the game choose MShep for you...

I think it's because he's on the cover or something like that.

Because there is a default John Shepard, Soldier, Earthborn blabla in ME1.
Buy ME1 or start your game and say hello to him.

18% is quite disappointing. Not sure that there are enough female players to warrant the resource allocation required for a fem-shep.

Half of that 18% are males playing for a LesLiara romance.

Not a waste. It's just majority of players are guys. And they rarely pick FemShepard. While girls quite often play as both genders. As a result, their choices also are added to the score. It's like: Majority of Guys: Broshep/FemShep: 1/0 + Majority of Girls: Broshep/FemShep: 1/1 = 2/1. Even I made a Broshep just to see the other side of game and romances, but my FemShepard is my main profile anyway

How can you simply assert this? So many female players I know hate BroShep and never play as him. And plenty of guys play as both (me included).

Personal experience, I guess? Majority of gamer girls I know play as both genders. Some of them even play only as a Broshep - stereotypes are quite strong even nowadays. On the other hand, most of guys I know prefer to play once as a Broshep

I think that femshep wasn't a waste of resources, I know only 18% of femsheps is a bit low,  but male and female Shepard are equally important and they are different views to play with them. By that way Kaidan and Wrex for example,  other classes less often than soldier or the insanity mode were a waste of resources too for low popularity or percentage, no?. I know that all players are majority males, but as a female gamer I'm glad to Bioware for included female option in almost all their games. I don't mind to play with a male but If I have the option to play with a female I prefer that, I feel like playing a female character fits more for me than a male one, I can identify with her more, but It's only my opinion .

I play MaleShep to romance Tali. Every female ME player I know plays as both genders whereas I think it's more likely for males in our society to be affected by machismo. Now, I'm not saying personal experience makes it absolutely true, but I'm guessing that this could be a factor. I know my fiance, despite having a very open attitude, does not play FemShep. He just wouldn't be able to immerse as well.

Oh well. It's all speculation anyhow. The statistics on something like this would be interesting to see. :)

Also, people need to read the OP's very brief post. (And ignore the all-caps homophobic response of a member of a minority bashing a minority.)

Have you ever played an MMO? Half the female PCs are male players.

I've seen people try to get the demographics on this with MMOs like here They found men are far more likely to play the opposite gender than women.

If you think an 18% investment from an audience of millions is something to scoff at, well, don't apply at EA.

If a female character looks like a strippers with giant boobs - sure, boys like that. But Shepard looks like a real human being, so she's not really popular among male players

For me, FemShep is Shepard so it was not a waste of time or resources. The role just suits a strong female lead and it has nice echos of Samus Aran.

I do play MMO's, actually. A lot. Anarchy Online, where I've seen probably the smallest percentage of female population than any other MMO I've played. (CoH/CoV, EQ, SW:ToR) But this isn't a MMO we're talking about. I'm specifically talking about Mass Effect, where it's not about the, "Give me free stuff!" or, "I prefer to look at a hot female that I can put in a white thong that somehow counts as gear." It's an RPG, where there's character immersion and a heavily armoured hero. Where they choose what they say to an LI with the ensuing romantic scene.

Maybe but  you still have the  women, who look like they aren't all that interested in playing the opposite sex. all you're going back to is, women are going to mostly play as femShep, and men mostly as broShep.

Also it is not normal for people to play twice or more through a game. Most players do not play through games more than once. It's likely the typical female player, plays once through the game as a femShep, and that's it.
