Clearly FemShep was a waste of Bioware resources...

Come to think of it, if you have a female Shepard, save Kaidan on Virmire and Kaidan is your love interest, it becomes a gender swap of the overused "damsel in distress" trope...

That subversion almost never happens in video games...
It's always the male character rescuing the helpless female character who's in trouble and needs rescuing...

So that's refreshing as hell, actually...

I probably wouldn't have picked up ME3 if it wasn't for gayShep. If you cater specifically to a group just because that group is the majority, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy in which only that group will buy your game. 18% of the people who play femShep may not seem like a lot, but it's still a good amount of gamers who choose to play as a female protagonist. By opening up their market to other groups, Bioware can catch a wider net and build up a fanbase for subsequent sequels.

Who pays attention to those stats anyway? As I said before, they are NOT equal to the REAL demographic because they only take that from COMPLETED games and games connected to the internet.

18% is still a fairly high demographic anyway, and it's better that Bioware still caters to them then ignores them like so many other companies.

It's worth noting that gay shepard doesn't require every single protagonist line being recorded twice...
There's really nothing else in the trilogy comparable to gender selection in terms of what it actually entails...

Those stats also said 68% of players DIDN'T get Wrex, so we know they're a load of BS.

In order to have Wrex, you have to...

- Have beaten Mass Effect 1
- Have imported a Mass Effect 1 save to Mass Effect 2
- Have beaten Mass Effect 2
- Have imported that Mass Effect 2 save to Mass Effect 3
- Successfully talked him down on Virmire with either his armor side mission or a very high charm or intimidate score

Or

- filled out a comic questionaire
- Have beaten Mass Effect 2
- Have imported that Mass Effect 2 save to Mass Effect 3

I know what you mean. And I like it. I'm not generally interested in the hulky, "I'LL SAVE YOUUUUU EVEN THOUGH I'M JUST A NPC THAT CAN'T DO ANNYTHINNNNNGG WITHOUT YOUUUU!" male types for my LI. I liked the slight reverse in roles in Citadel, but it was brief. And he did deserve to get to step up a bit. :) Like, I would never, ever ever romance Vega. Ever. Not my type at all.

But the Kaidan/Alistair type? Yeah, I can go for that. Be chivalrous but don't undermine my self sufficiency.

Feels like that's BioWare's thoughts. They didn't do much with advertising for her after 3 released. Hell, she's not even on the sodding Trilogy box set, after all the advertisements and polls (still don't know why).

I would have never played past my boyfriend (best friend at the time) picking up ME1 the week it came out, if he hadn't mentioned "Go ahead, have fun. Roll a female Shepard!"

And I was like "!!!!!!!!" At the time. female protagonists in non-WoW games delighted the metric hell out of me. To be honest, they still do.

Good, I usually have to wonder if I'm doing something wrong whenever I end up in the overwhelming majority of something. Tyranny of the majority sucks, and without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible.

Well, with this logic, Bioware have been wasting ressource and time on Insanity and 5 of 6 class. And a lot of other things.

This. The possibility to choose is an integral part of rpgs.

Not a 'waste' as OP put it but it DEFINITELY merits some thought behind it. Giving 18% what they want or using those resources to create a 40% bigger game? I have +300 hrs in ME1, +300 hrs in M2 an probably +600 hrs in ME3 & ME3MP and I , for the life of me, can't get myself to roleplay another gender. It feels wrong to me. Its like trying to roleplay as a gay manshep. I'm not gay so the idea of roleplaying my shep into kissing a man is repulsing to me.

It feels like id be one step away from Chris Hanson telling me to take a seat.

Femshep as a gender option was not a waste of time, what was a waste of time was the focus on giving her a distinct 3D model, which turned out to be bloody ****.

In that sense, yes a waste, but the whole idea of a femshep absolutely not.

There are far too many variables to consider than a % value.

The majority of Dragon Age Origins players played as a human noble male, that doesn't make the other origins pointless.

That's odd. In most cases, I have slightly more trouble with my Shepard kissing a woman. (Not that I haven't romanced Liara or the girls, I just feel more comfortable with the boys). <_<

My GF at the time hated playing Femshep because she described it as "a man that looks like a woman" for most of the movements Femshep makes are identical to Sheploo so to me that means they use the exact same skeletal model. My thinking is immersion is being broken for some people because an "uncanny valley" of sorts, just like when I watch Dark Knight Rises Bane's voice will break me out of the movie for it screams that it was dubbed over.

Besides I doubt they would remove something that 18% of the people used before removing Insanity difficulty which only 4% of the people finished.

I find Femshep to be very good, as Jennifer Hale does a really good job as her, theres a lot more emotion in her performance than in Meers. It was not a waste.

Half of the Shepards ive played have been female.

Since data shows Femshep is a minority... we should treat her as a minority. For example, we could make it more realistic. Have FemShep be a lower rank then man shep. Also I think Fem Shep should get less XP and credits for completing a quest. Little things like this need to be added so when playing a fem shep the player gets the vibe that "Yes, Fem Shep is a hero.... but shes still not as good of a hero as man shep.

little bits of realism like this would really enhance the games immersion.

You're joking right?

Btw, there was no data prior to ME1 and they started with both as equals, now, should they have changed that for ME2 and ME3 then or something ( when the stats showed more ppl played with maleshep? )
I see no point in saying it was a waste. As said in some other posts, then you can remove 5/6 or 4/6 classes, insanity, and some squadmates, and some other stuff to and loose 1/2 of fun that makes this game awesome ...having a choice it's what's great about this game, being classes, squadies or anything else.....

I think the idea is that more women are (hopefully) going to play video games in the future, and if you're going to have the option to build your own character, like in Mass Effect, it wouldn't make sense not to have a female option.

18% may not seem like much now, but we'll see what happens to that number in a few years and several mass effect/RPG cycles later.

I think the most important thing is the idea of Femshep and what she's supposed to represent, especially in an uber-macho gaming market.

Didn't Bioware justify the cut of multiple races in DA2 because about 80% of the players used human in DA:O?

I play MaleShep to romance Tali. Every female ME player I know plays as both genders whereas I think it's more likely for males in our society to be affected by machismo. Now, I'm not saying personal experience makes it absolutely true, but I'm guessing that this could be a factor. I know my fiance, despite having a very open attitude, does not play FemShep. He just wouldn't be able to immerse as well.

Oh well. It's all speculation anyhow. The statistics on something like this would be interesting to see. :)

Also, people need to read the OP's very brief post. (And ignore the all-caps homophobic response of a member of a minority bashing a minority.)

I guess our house is an anomoly then. As are our friends.

All the guys I know will play both male or female characters in any game.

I however, have only ever played female characters in any game and I am female.

I played Femshep, my man played Femshep as well and he also had her romance Liara lol.
