Crappy loadouts, no gear, zero use of medigel and rockets.
If they have bought the game yesterday, that's THEIR problem not ours. They have to go bronze/silver and stop being a burden in gold/plat.
Expecting be carried is not coop at all.

-When speccing a character for the first time, put a few points in each power and then run a few games with it, even if it means not using all your points at first. Unless you know exactly how to spec something, do some test runs. I've used many respec cards because I thought I knew how to spec something and was really wrong (cough, collector adept, cough cough)
-Watch good players play on YouTube and try to study how they are so good. Excellent players include INVADERONE, JumpinProductions, and xcaliz0rz.
-If you want to learn a map more thoroughly, play against Cerberus on Bronze. On Wave 3, complete the objective, then kill everything except the Nemesis. 1 Nemesis cannot kill you, so you can explore to your heart's content.
That's all I can think of for now.
EDIT: Spacing Fix

Ok, so to validate your sterling work here:
New player (having started ME3MP about 2 months ago) reporting for duty! I'm able to hold my own in silver by now, but wouldn't touch gold with a long stick yet, because i don't have a reliable team and it takes ages to get anything rare or UR to level IV or above.
Anyway: very helpful read, even if i'm still quaking in my wet boots at the thought of going gold anytime in the foreseeable future. Thanks for the insights!
what platform are you on? (xbox,ps3,pc) if xbox, send me a message on xbox live and i'l bring you into a few games

His videos are really good. I don't always agree with his builds on some classes, but that's more a matter of prefrence and playstyle. But, yeah any of his builds are great to use, although some will be more dependant on weapons and gear which newer players might not have, but still perform well enough.
Although I will say one thing. DON'T try builds for the FIRST time on Gold and Platinum, it's a exercise in tedium for everyone in the party. Do a game on Silver while you muck about with the powers and builds, then bounce into Gold and Platinum when you're comfortable with the build. It's awful when you either have someone in the game or even the player themselves can find it frustrating, if they can't get to grips with a newly specced character as they're swarmed by Dragoon spam etc.

In more detail? When I started out (6 month ago or so) I watched his series "fun with guns" and it was very helpful.

I miss him in general. His other vids were entertaining and I played with him once and had a great time. And he always responded to his fans.... shame life caught up with him.

Ran gold last night on my Talon Merc. 1 mission was successful, second in damage. Second wiped on wave 7, top damage. 3rd wiped on wave 10, bottom damage. Followed the tips in here - they served me well. Was a nice challenge.
good job, practice makes perfect. although not with a squishy talon merc. go tankier first, learn as much as possible, then classes with less health...

sometimes you need to run away from extraction as the mobs seem to spawn right near it!
This is actually a good point. On maps with a spawn point near extraction, like Reactor (in room to the right) and Giant (room past the rubble). It's a good idea to have someone missile the spawn, then stay there to prevent them from spawning there again.

biggest tip ever, stop reading things from bsn, find your own style.
I respectfully disagree. Reading these forums has made me a much better player. I learn all the bugs, both detrimental and helpful and learn cool power tricks and game mechanincs. I learn the spawn points on the maps, and how to control them. I learn the best combos and best strategies for each class and character. I LEARN from these forums. Play smarter.

You can also meet some good players which will be nice enough to drag your arse through Platinum until you're comfortable enough to PUG and still extract most of the time. Like they were nice enough to do with me all those months ago.

This too: The few times I've asked for teammates on here have gone very well. Made the transition between Silver and Gold much better. I bet Ashen Earth (aka Void Nexus 00) still remembers carrying me through Gold games
