play how you want, but new players probably shouldn't be going into platinum games. just a waste of time...

biggest tip ever, stop reading things from bsn, find your own style.

I don't think it's a binary situation where a player does one or the other.

I think that BSN is an excellent resource that helps players develop their own play-style in an informed way.  And the people are great!  There is a lot of great information and viewpoints from which to springboard.  I think BSN makes players more empowered and more effective.

Well, I started two days ago and have a decent Human Engineer that can now survive Bronze matches. Incinerate and Overload take care of pretty much every enemy. I'm only equipping the N7 Eagle to be able to cast frequently.

That said, I'm stuck on 0 medi-gel. How do I get more? From Packs? I've been told to focus on Recruit Packs until I acquire/max out all Commons but I don't remember seeing any medi-gel there.

Recruit packs will give you one random consumable (gel or ops packs or rockets or TCPs). For guaranteed gels, buy JEPs.

as soon as you have the Falcon unlocked, you'll be able to walk into silver and do well. keep the enemy staggered, prime with incinerate and detonate with overload...

his example here is using the human sentinel, but the same applies for your engineer

probably shouldn't be mentioning platinum!

Lol, yeah. I should really say Gold players looking to enter Platinum. Not completely new players. That's just painful for everyone involved and the new guy doesn't learn much as he spends the entire match downed.

Although I don't mind taking one new guy into Gold, but the other two people have to be reasonably good if I'm PuGing or the game drags on for half an hour, if they're all new guys.

completely off topic, but I don't like Tywin Lannister as much after the season 3 premiere.

Well I am serious. I for one grow weary of literally 9/10 of my matches being ones that I need to solo. These new guys with no gear, no consumables, no idea how to play the game should simply not be playing in gold.

sorry, but i kinda stopped reading after that. people can play the game how they want, if you're not good enough to carry them, maybe you shouldn't be playing gold? just saying

it winds me up a little when new players come into gold lobbies or set them up, but that's their prerogative. if i land in a lobby with new players, i'll play, complete the match in 20mins and hope they learn something based on my positioning, when i used rockets etc etc.

ryoldschool said he just leaves lobbies if they don't have gear (somewhere in this thread). why? help them through it and maybe they'll learn, which in turn means less of a "problem" for the more experienced player

I think you misunderstood that line (yeah, this response is 8 days old and I still need to read the other pages....). If there is no gear to be used, no consumables to fall back on, and no solid understanding of the most basic game strategies, then sticking to bronze and silver is the best way to resolve these problems before stepping up to Gold.

When I see new or new-ish players drop into lobbies naked and immediately ready up, my first thought is not that they will learn something by watching me or someone else in spectator mode, it's that they are looking for someone to piggy back on for an easy ride. It's unfair to place this burden on other players, no matter how light that burden actually is, and it's especially frustating when you think back on how you started playing.

I didn't even think of touching Gold until I had promoted several times, had gear to use, and a few classes I had become real familiar with. Why should it be different for those who are more recent additions to the playerbase? Is that Geth Juggernaut really going to take them far? :?

Avoid Banshees is thebest, or any sync-kill untis.

* And I am not the worst person on platinum, but for one game, the entire team of phantoms and banshees went for me.Every round ended in a sync-kill.*

i've stated in the OP that i am willing to help break people in to gold games, i just ask that anyone asking is genuine and not looking to sponge, but wants to learn how to develop quicker

Why would anyone reccomend trying for the Falcon to someone who appears to only be playing bronze? The Falcon is a rare weapon. 2/25 chance in an Arsenal pack (not counting the random gears and mods you'll get, which decrease those odds), and there are worse chances in any other pack. You can't fund that kind of a quest with only bronze. Maybe we could at the beginning of the game, when there were less than half as many rares, but not now.

We have to focus on what's easily obtainable, the useful commons/uncommons. The Avenger and Mantis at X are fine for Silver and can even do well on Gold with good enough aim.

i'm saying that should you get a falcon, even at 1, then you can make things work in a silver match, AND a gold match. this is demonstrated quite nicely by xcal in the vid i linked.
obviously it's a lot harder to get hold of all the weapons now, but the falcon, when obtained, is a very good weapon to use to get credits and get the rest of the weapons unlocked.

I really enjoyed reading this reply and don't think it would hurt to link to again: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/343/index/16383941/5#16387107

Having played the game so much I find that I can be more prone to forget some details, particularly with executions. It's never good to underestimate an enemy.

But good thread overall, Biggs.

Makes me want to go back in time, when I had still yet to play with a level 10 Carnifex and my engineer was as scrawny as ever.

How about this: You're not a bad player because you're incompetent on Gold. If you have squishy characters, beginner gear & weapons, they go a long way in helping you to adapt to the higher difficulties, and they may tell the story more than your ability to handle Gold.

Don't be embarrassed to play on Bronze or Silver until your manifest develops.

The problem is it's spilled over into Silver too.  I haven't cleared a Silver game in days and it's usually due to idiot teammates trying to lone-wolf spawn groups, getting killed, and not even bothering to keep pressing X and letting themselves bleed out/get executed.

Silver has been a hot mess the last three or four days, it's like pugging Gold lately, except even more frustrating because it's Silver and it shouldn't BE so damn hard.

I understand this, and I do love the Falcon, and it can certainly clear Silver and Gold with the right skillset. But it should not be recommended to a new player because they cannot be expected to obtain one quickly or easily. Especially so since there are quite a few common and uncommon weapons that can play on Gold just fine.

The video is a fine example of how to use the Falcon on Gold. The problem I have is that after 90 hours of playing on my weaker PC account that started later, but has a lot of Gold under his belt, I cannot replicate xcal's loadout in that video, and neither can an even newer player. The lvl 1 equipment is fine, but not only is he using a Falcon X (rare), he's using the Assault Rifle Extended Barrel V (uncommon, and even uncommon mods are harder to get now with those stupid uncommon gears standing around being useless), Assault Rifle Magazine Upgrade (common), a Tempest X (uncommon), SMG Ultralight Materials V (uncommon), SMG High Velocity Barrel V (rare), and Stronghold Package V (rare). That's a lot of expensive upgrades for a supposedly new player's loadout.

A more useful video for actual new players would have been something like using lvl 1 warp rounds, shotgun amp, power efficiency, a Katana X (common), Shotgun Smart Choke (common), and Shotgun High Caliber Barrel (common).

Heh.  He was never really supposed to be likeable.  Tyrion is one of the very few sympathetic characters in the entire show.

I've noticed the influx of new players too. And some of them are horrid, and have bad equipment and weapons. It's worse on Platinum, at least I can carry Gold games. I can't on Platinum, besides it's just not fun.

I'm really wondering how they haven't realised after a few games when they wipe on wave 2/3 "maybe Gold isn't for me, I'll play silver for a bit" Haven't seen it yet though.

well, people can play the game how they want...

But it really does hurt the whole team when someone is dying constantly and not contributing to the game at all. I just think that new players should stick to bronze as silver until they can handle themselves in a more difficult match

fundamentally, we are in agreement. but WHEN a new player gets a falcon, which some new folk will have out there, go with that. it helps to stay alive and allows use of powers to kill off enemies quickly (as shown in xcals demo).

now, if using the setup you mentioned above, in gold, then the enemies are not going to be staggered as much and will close the gap, which in all likelihood will make the noob panic like a wild horse and die. so reading this thread should help, as i'm sure someone here has gone over "soft cover" and when to back off from a situation and retake "soft cover" to re-engage.

my point here was, that IF you happen to have a falcon, use it.
