Months ago I looked for lobbies that would communicate. Now I prefer the quiet ones.

Few things are more annoying than having an inept teammate give you worthless advice while watching from spectator mode for the fourth wave in a row. It's never anything useful, like "two Marauders around the corner." I had a guy once tell me repeatedly that I needed to prioritize the Brutes, because "they're hard to dodge, and they'll corner you and then you'll be ****ed." Please, Captain Helpful, just RIP until I kill-res you, because you're just buzzing in my ear.

got to love those backseat players.

I really don't care but i don't like mics anyway, i find them... disturbing and it seems that slows down the connection and increases the lag.

It takes a lot for me to kick someone in Gold. If they leeched a game or intentionally or effed with me they get the boot.

On Platinum it really depends how I'm feeling, but I rarely play Platinum outside of speedruns anyways because I don't like long games or using tryhard classes.

@ OP How do you even know that the kicking is mic related? Are they telling you this? I have never kicked for lack of mic (I try to avoid kicking and rarely do it) and I've never seen anyone do that.

@ Upinya, it's been years since I took Logic- but wouldn't your hotdog expression fail because of a fallacy? Either way Venn Diagrams would explain this whole kicking thing quite satisfactorily.

I prefer mics, easy to coordinate when say all 4 people are running to turn off an object.but not an end-all-be-all

Same. There is something to be said about unspoken teamwork and having a veil put over player personality. Kind of Journey-ish.

Once in a while though, there are those occasional pugs where everyone is talking, and they seem like good people, and so I plug in my mic.

I have a friend ( xbox ) who refuses to play with people who don't have a mic, and will kick them if they don't put their mic on when he is hosting.

Its kind of a social thing, he wants to spend his on-line time talking to people, even if he will never play another game with them or not.

Its not because he thinks they will be bad or anything, but he just does not want to spend time with somebody without a mic - they might as well be an AI.

On the performance side of things, talking over the mic has a lot of positives -

* you are more likely to be warned that nobody can get to you so you have to gel
* not going to waste rockets during a hack because somebody calls the next rocket
* being warned when there are only one or two of you left in a round
* if somebody needs cover during a 1234 disable devices

Most of the negatives are due to some blabbermouth that wants to tell you how to play your character, or has some irritating sound problem with their system. You can mute them if you have to.

btw, I always have my mic on, even in PUG - that is actually how I met quite a few of my friends that I play with.

Have the people over the mic come right out said we are kicking this person due to no mic?

Yup, It's happened about 15 times in the last month or two, where I join and they say "Oh just kick 'em they don't even have a mic" (This is also on xbox by the way)

I've never had that happen to me and I am on the xbox and usually do not have my mic plugged in by default.  If others area actually talking at times I will connect the mic though.

I've been playing pug gold exclusively for ages now and dont use a mic. In fact I rarely see anyone use a mic and those that do tend to be annoying to play with.

I actually prefer silent PUG lobbies myself, if I enter a lobby and everyone else is mic'd I leave.

I replied to Beerfish about this, They have stated as I enter the lobby "Just kick 'em they don't even have a mic" or some variant of that.

Simple Question: Do you kick people who don't have a mic on gold/platinum.
I seem to be experiencing this more often lately even though I think I have a fairly decent N7/Challenge rank,
I don't think some people realise that just because I don't have a mic plugged in doesn't mean I can't hear them, I barely talk on mic anyways.
So yeah; Do you kick if they don't have a mic on higher difficulties?

Depends on how many other players in the lobby had no mike.  Everybody non-communicative usually doesn't help on GOLD/PLAT.  Might kick someone without a mic in hopes of getting at least 1 other mic in the lobby.

Nope. Not having a mic is pretty common. Doesn't give me any clues as to their usefulness or skill level even if they do have a mic. Gears and equipment speak volumes, and are in my opinion, a kickable offense if not used in gold or platinum. Plus more often than not those too stingy to use equipment and/or gear end up being the ones to die and rage quit within the first 3 rounds.
