So my character in DA:O never wore a helmet.

However...in the beginning of Awakening...my character has a helmet on...which looks ridiculous because it doesn't go with the armor I am wearing.

Is there no way to start Awakening without a helmet?

Not that I know of. Probably you would want to equip a matching helm before importing to awakening.
