For my next character I plan to make an arcane warrior tank with leliana for lockpicking and wynne for support. I'm considering for my fourth companion: Sten, Alistair, Shale, Dog, maybe Morrigan but I always use her and I'd like a change. I usually use Alistair as well but if people tell me here he's definitely the way to go then I'll keep him. So those are my options, what do people think?

Playing a mage myself, I find little use for Morrigan after I get Wynne TBH. Maybe I'll let her tag a lot if I feel like staring at boobs, but she's a bad idea to take if you are going to keep leliana happy.

I like to bring Allistair/Loghain to fill the 4th spot personally, once you get them high enough and have their Templar+Champion maxxed out, 2 aoe stuns are too good to pass up (as opposed to filling that niche with dog or something)

But I have never really managed to find a niche in my group for Oghren or Sten, so I can't quite say.

If you are going to tank with your AW (rather than off tank) you don't need Alistair. I generally use my AW as a caster with off tank as a back up, but it's a matter of what you want to do.

I'd probably go for Sten as dps - if you're using Leli as an archer/bard/ranger. If you're using her as a dw/bard/assassin or whatever, then I'd use Shale instead, and have her set up for ranged attacks as a first preference.

Edit: Since I don't main tank with my AW I'm not sure - but the lack of taunt/threaten may make holding aggro a little harder.

I'm going with a tank on the basis of an arcane warrior guide I found at gamefaqs. It may or may not be the best strategy but my biggest problem so far has been a lack of long term development so i want a plan from the start. I read somewhere that Alistair could be switched to dual wielding early on for DPS

Sten is quite effective when developed right. He's a bit prone to die a lot early on, but with patience and the right development, he's an awesome 2h fighter.

I like taking Sten along. I think he makes the story a lot more interesting, and he's good damage and a good off tank as well.

Dog for the ability to rape mages and ranged attackers. Overwhelm and dread howl are your best friends

Zhevran as a high dex dual wielder. Or you can respec sten in to dual wielding berserker.

Zevran sounds like he'd be a good fit. Since you've got a tank as your main, his DPS is one of the highest in the game. Otherwise, Dog is decent support, but at higher levels becomes outclassed very easily. Sten and Oghren are fairly comparable, but two-handed is one of the weaker warrior chains. There are some good blades/mauls that deal massive damage against particular targets at higher levels, though.
