I'm a PS3 gamer so I've just now gotten access to the first Mass Effect. I've beaten 2 and three multiple times but now I want to play the whole trilogy with my Shep. I want to get the max of the experience so I need to know what decisions carry over to the other games. For example I've heard of Kirrahe? that you meet in ME3 if he survivies the first game. Those kind of things. I just want to make sure I don't miss out? By the way I'm doing a paragon playthrough.
Playing Mass Effect 1 for the first time...

There's several decisions that carry over, some big, some small. The major ones (like Wrex surviving, Council choice, etc. for example) are the same ones that were listed in Genesis. Little ones like Kirrahe carry over too, but most of those are regulated to Email updates.
Pretty much everything that can be carried over should be listed here.

Are you looking for spoilers, or non-spoilers?

To keep it spoiler free, it's a safe bet that trying to save people and using persuasion options (paragon or renegade doesn't really matter) results in more visible consequences in the later games.
All in all, for your first time, I'd recommend playing according to what you think is the right way to go though, without getting constrained by guides or the paragon/renegade system too much. It's the most interesting and immersing experience IMO.
Let us know what you think of ME1. I would find it interesting to hear the opinion of someone who is already familiar with the sequels and the universe.
Have fun!

There are lots of things that can be carried from ME1 to ME2 and 3, from main events to side quests. Though I think the main ones are these:
*****SPOILER ALERT********
- Wrex: On Virmire, he can be killed by either you or Ashley. There are 2 ways to keep him alive, however. 1/ Finish Wrex's family armor quest (talk to him, he will give you this quest at some point). Or 2/ Have high enough Paragon or Regen point to pick the special option when you talk to him on Virmire.
- Kirahe: His survivability is based on how you do the infiltrate Saren's lab mission on Virmire. From my experience, if you want to keep him alive, listen to their radio chat, and clear all special locations on the map BEFORE going into Saren's lab building. Then choose to unlock the door only (the other option is direct guards to Kirahe's place, which result in his death).
- Death: On Virmire, you will have to choose to leave either Kaidan or Ashley behind, which result in their deaths. It's up to you.
- Romance Liara: If you plan to romance Liara, then you should go to Therum first, right after becoming Spectre. If you come to Therum after finishing Noveria and Feros, there will be a funny conversation with her, but you won't be able to romance her afterward because of the game plot quests.
- Council: You can choose to save or let the Council die at the end of the game.
There are several "not so important" quests that results can be carried over to the next games. Nothing special, just my personal favorites, you don't have to finish them.
- Tali's pilgrimage quest: Tali doesn't give it to you. It started out as a quest which require you to destroy several geth bases on several planets. At the end of this series of quests, you will recover some data. Talk to Tali before turning those data to Hacket, she will ask to make a copy of those data so that she can complete her pilgrimage. If you do this quest, in ME 2, when you first met Tali, there will be an extra chat option about this.
- Sha'ira the consort: no special consequences, just a letter in ME 2, and some amusing conversation in ME3: Citadel. Though it's just kinda fun to nail the most famous consort on Citadel
)
- Rogue VI quest: Technically, this is the first time you met EDI
If you do this quest, EDI will talk about it a little in ME 3.
- Conrad Verner: Because the slapping scene in ME 2 is just hilarious. in ME1 you can find him in Wards market I believe.
- Nassana Dantius quest: If you helped finding her sister in ME1, she will talk about it when you meet her again in ME 2

Pay a visit to the market to meet Conrad Verner. This guy carries over to all 3.
Visit Flux and chat with the lady at the bar called Rita who tells you of her sister. This eventually ties into one of Conrad's appearances in 3.
Kirrahe is pretty easy. On virmire; you get the choice to take the heat off his troops by triggering actions that limit the enemies. They pop up as you progress and as long as you disable everything and take the heat off Kirrahe's team; he'll make it through to 3

Thanks. It's kinda cool getting to see where it all began. I now know what the is Mako that Cortez talks about, and I met Nassana wandering the Citadel and I was like 'oh hey you're the one Thane kill's.' That stuff is cool. It's a little weird getting to know Garrus and Tali like I've never met them before. I have to say though, I HATE the combat. It took me so long to get used to it, and there's still so much I don't understand about it. The controls are so clunky and the enmies are soo fast. I don't know how people beat it on insanity.

Most people playing insanity on ME1 do it on NG+.
Also ME1 combat was great. At least they paid more attention to the writing in the earlier instalments, which is what ME was supposed to be about... (Narrative > Combat).

To get the most out of Conrad make sure to buy the Elkoss Combine license and finish the collect asari writings side quest. The first is easy the second takes of solar system hoping.

The important thing about ME1 combat is that powers have separate cooldowns. So when levelling your characters unlock new powers as fast as you can.

I think you also have to do Gavin Hossle's sidequest on Feros.

Also, don't forget to travel around and scan random planets. There are a number of great little sidequests that trigger when you enter a sertein system or land on a particular planet.

Let Fist survive and make sure you do the side quest with Helena Blake to make ME2 Omega more interesting.
