I still would have bought the games, but I think a lot would have been lost in terms of character development and storylines.

As long as I still got decent character development, absolutely! : D

I may still buy them. But only when it would be better than boredom.

The romances are what make Bioware games special from other RPGs. Without them, I wouldn't feel very emotionally invested or even interested in Bioware games as I am. If they weren't there than I probably would've quit buying Bioware games after the ME3 Endings.

How did you feel about the Genophage plot and Mordin?  Legion and the Geth/Quarian conflict?

You don't need romance to get invested in characters and plot lines.

I would have, but after the ending debacle and BioWares handling of it, I'm done with the games, new ones included. And I'm sure that my opinion and personal choices somehow make me an idiot...

If they took out the romance the ending to Mass Effect 3 would have been acceptable and yes I would still play the mass effect series because its the greatest franchise

That one line from Grunt thanking Shepard for getting him out of the tank was more meaningful to me than any of the romances I've played through, so yeah I still would have bought the games

I would've absolutely still loved the series. Would I have loved it quite as much? No. However, the romances/in-depth character interaction is what took the series from being really, really good to being my favorite video game series of all time.

yes, I would buy it if it didn't have romance options. But the relationships are really cool.

I'd still play it, but it wouldn't be as fun.

I bought ME3 without knowing what was in game other than the endings. Didn't know that I could get a LI until it was right it my face. They add layer, so I'd buy any of the games even if it didn't.

Sure, but I probably wouldn't have played it as many times as I have. The romances add that extra special something for me that make me get really invested.

Definitely. Romances are just the icing on the character development cake.

Romances added an enjoyable dynamic for me.

However, it was not my main draw into the Mass Effect series.

I didn't even know romance was even part of the game when I got hooked on ME.

@OP:
Yes, most definitely I would still play the trilogy. In fact, in hindsight I think my favorite character may have suffered in characterization because too much attention was given to her romance at the expense of other, more interesting aspects. I'd gladly relegate the romance to headcanon completely to get those back.

Having said that, romance adds significantly to the appeal of any story like this. The ME trilogy has an all-encompassing feel, like it touches so many different aspects of life with the little stories it tells within the context of the greater plot, that it would feel incomplete if there was no romance at all.

Absolutely. The romances have never been much of a thing for me, despite how much I dig exploring the characters and watching their evolution through conversation and "loyalty".

Absolutely. I didn't even bother with romances until right before ME3 came out. We still get tons of great moments with the characters, and the world is just as immersive.

The Relationships between my hero and the people he meets are what make Bioware games for me. Not just romances, but friendships, rivalries, etc. Building those relationships in different ways is what gives those games their replay value.

Saving the galaxy is meaningless unless you have someone to save it for. Without them, its just a sci fi themed cover shooter.

I have to think your scenario is unrealistic. A game without romances would probably have a different design philosophy overall and the differences wouldn't be so neatly contained in that one respect.

That said, if they were, sure I'd still play it. The relationships would still be there and that is the important thing. They just wouldn't be those kind of relationships.
