Yeah, backed this and no regrets, even though I'm not sure I'll like the combat. Exploration in Larian's games is about as good as it gets.

True that and the dialogue and quests are always unique and well done. They have talented writers.

So they can only send out one survey according to the update. So how are the people who pledged for creating henchmen/items/message in the woods/etc. going to let Larian know what they want? Will they email those backers a form to fill out, or is the onus on you to contact Larian Studios and request a form?

Is this strictly turn based? Not having real-time combat with pausing, like in BW games, would make for a pretty boring experience for me. :/

I enjoy a game like X-COM for different reasons than a medieval RPG with a standard set by games like Baldur's Gate.

Bump!

RPS has a new preview up.

Unexpectedly, the game begins by placing the players in the role of investigators. There’s a murder and a mystery to go along with it, and the first major quest involves discovering the perpetrator. There’s a spot of turn-based orc bashing beforehand, as the heroic duo of Source Hunters head into town, but it’s entirely possible to spend the first four or five hours playing detective. Conversations – mostly comical and well-written – contain clues and accusations, and the flow of the investigation subtly pushes the player into the sizable town’s several districts. It’s a clever way to introduce characters and the different ways of interacting with the world.

For example, to find a way into one suspect’s house, me and my partner found that we could pick the lock, teleport inside using arcane magicks, talk somebody into giving us the key, or murder the person carrying the key. Everyone in the game can be killed and Larian have ensured that every quest can be completed using alternate means if an essential NPC dies. Many of these backup solutions are intentionally obscure and/or challenging, but that they exist at all shows Larian’s strength of commitment to this particular brand of sandbox/open world.

It’s a simulated place, with basic but functional behaviours for all of its inhabitants. Even the creatures out in the wilds have been hand-placed rather than spawning randomly and it was during a test of the ways in which monsters interact with NPCs that I created a catastrophe. I just wanted to know if orcs would attack guards if a group were lured close enough to the town walls. I ended up with blood on my hands. And on my clothes and coagulating on the soles of my shoes where I’d stepped through the rivers of the stuff that had spilled from all of the dead people. The dead people that the orcs had killed.

I instigated a massacre.

Read the full article here. And I cannot wait to play this game.

Sounds pretty sweet. Apparently they got the whole Larian team working on it to make it as best as humanly possible before the February 28th release.

Been looking forward to this for ages. Glad to see it's coming along nicely. This will be the first RPG I've been able to co-op through with a friend since BG. Can't wait to dig into the magic system.

Is anyone playing Early Access on Steam right now? If so, could you share your impressions?

Kickstarter supporter here.

I've put a handful of hours into the alpha, and so far:

1) The game looks very, very pretty. On my gaming PC (i7, GTX 670 Ti, Windows 7) it runs very well on max, but when I activate v-sync there's a noticeable stutter. Then again, this is alpha; probably it'll get patched.
On my old desktop (E8400 3Ghz dual core, GTX 260, Vista) it fails to run however; possibly a Vista 32 bit issue?
Overall, there are bugs and crashes, but nothing major so far (apart from it failing to run on my older machine).

2) The lack of voice acting does take some getting used to. In old games like Baldur's Gate, a limited amount of voice acting for the NPC's helped imbuing the world with a bit of life and character. Now that's totally dependent on text (and graphics), although the writing, so far, has been pretty decent with some nice characterization. I certainly laughed a lot, Larian has a very quirky and likeable sense of humor.

3) The feel of the setting and story so far is both whimsical and serious, meaning that it's light-hearted on the surface but some more serious themes lurk beneath it (intolerance, prejudice etc.). Larian tends to tackle more serious themes usually in a humorous manner, more akin to parody / comedy than tragedy but it's there.

4) The combat is interesting and highly tactical. Caution and experimentation are both necessary; caution because you run the risk of bumbling into opponents that will crush you (to goo ;)), experimentation to see what works in specific circumstances etc.

5) The NPC characters (I've recruited two so far) are interesting, and there's definitely a fair degree of interaction between your actions and their attitudes / comments. There's definitely a BG-ish party dynamic going on. BG veterans will probably love this.

Overall the alpha is definitely playable (on my gaming PC that is) and fun. Is it worth 40 bucks? To be honest, right now I would say 'only if you intend to support the devs' and play it and thus effectively test the game for them (when the game crashes, you are automatically prompted if you want to send logs and comments / bug reports to Larian).
Otherwise, just wait until release and, unless reviews indicate something amiss (my personal impression is that the game is on the right track though, but nothing is certain of course), get it then.

really hated that part of old games. I find voice-acting to be an either/or type of thing: it should either be present for everyone and everything, or wholly absent.

Yay, six moar days! This game needs more love on the BSN.

Watched a bunch of dev streams lately, this will be so much fun. Although elemental magic combinations look a bit op. I'll have a fun time roleplaying against myself with the co-op dialogue system.

I don't have a PC to play it, but I know Larian will end up patching the game anyway so I'll experience a more polished version later on. The only thing that might be off putting for me is the turn based combat. If any dev will convert me it's gonna be Larian. I hope the game's a success, Larian is a great dev and they deserve it.

No.

I've got to pre-order it from Amazon today.

Agreed but I think the questing and dialogue will be more than adequate to make up for that.

...and the customization looks ridiculously amazing:

That is odd. I tried to get my key last week on the KS page and it wouldn't let me. I'll browse the GoG forums, surely someone has brought it up. Also, has anyone heard the title music for this game? It's like a piece of symphonic music, just amazing:
