Game of the Decade

Now, I played Half-Life 1 back when it came out, it was amazing. Streamlined, no red, yellow, blue or green keyes to find, scary, challenging, immersing, all great things heralding that video games were starting to develop into something special. Half Life 2 came out in 04 I think, but I didn't get to play it for years, couldn't run it, was broke, couldn't afford a PC to play it. But I heard so many people talking about it, how amazing it was. I'm not really one to buy into hype. But knowing they took their time on HL2, and how good HL1 was, I knew it would likely be something amazing again.
Flash forward, the Orange Box for 360: I get it and... "here gordon, have another crowbar." What? "Don't say a single word ever, EVER, your too perfect to talk or contribute to the plot in any way other than a crowbar handler" You serious? Next generation? New technology? Better everything since HL1 and I'm crawling around in an air duct looking to open a door over and over? This is what people thought was so good? Terrible vechicle sequences? First person jumping puzzles? Did I even purchase the right game? It was a joke, I'm not going to do a play by play of the whole game, I was shocked how terrible it was all around. The graphics weren't that good on the PC (as I found out later).
2010: ME 2 is one of the best games I've ever played. I know its pros and cons, and I don't want to drone on what most here know, but how in hells f%&$ did that game not get Game of the Decade? Me 2 was such a different game within itself based on how your ME1 import played, and every playthrough of HL2 was the SOUND OF A CROWBAR SMASHING AGAINST WOOD! Doesn't anyone notice this? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!!!
It won game of the year on IGN and a few other places even thought it came out in January, against Halo: Reach and COD:Black OPs. I remember one article saying how the staff couldn't get ME2 out of their head and 11 months later still resonated against that fall line up of AAA titles.

Morrowind and Fallout: NV come to mind.
Then you also have games like MGS 2 and 3.
RA2, Generals.
San andreas.
All of them leagues above ME2.
Which is still a very good game.

Now, with ME2, it's my favourite game out of the trilogy, but it still doesn't hold a torch to some of the older games I've played, maybe because they specifically changed the way I view games or influenced my future in what type of games I would buy, etc - that's a big factor to consider.

What do you rate it on, what is the criteria? How can you pick between something like the sheer influence that World of Warcraft has had in shaping MMO's, or the influence Baldur's Gate 2 has had in shaping western RPG's. Beyond Good and Evil, Shenmue, Shadow of the Colossus, Deus Ex. Then there's those on the periphery, Resident Evil 4, GTA: Vice City, Call of Duty 4, Halo, etc.
Impossible to choose. Pointless even trying.

Star Wars is still cited by many as the best Sci-Fi film series despite the mediocre prequels.
Battlestar Galactica is still cited by many as the best scifi TV series despite a bad ending.
Lost is still cited by many as the best TV series despite a bad ending.
I'd rather have those 4 than anything else in the genre. BY FAR

The physics were also completely revolutionary, and it's modability and open source engine greatly helped the gaming community and developers. Oh, and it's driving parts are awesome on PC, controllers/consoles suck in that regard. As for silent protaganist, see the dragon age forums for exhaustive debate on the subject, suffice it to say there are pros and cons of voiced protagonists. It still had a coherent narrative that was pretty damn good.

Don't get me wrong, ME2 was a superb game from start to finish. But KotOR, Halo CE, Halo 2, MGS4, Deus Ex, DX:HR, Shadow of the Colossus, Demon's Souls, and about a half dozen other games of the 2000's were also superb from start to finish, and I wouldn't consider ME2 to best any of them.

Deus Ex? Game of the decade? Oh please, there are hundreds of way better games in that time frame. And I mean, WAY better games. Deus Ex was a solid game, but it doesn't even compare to what I would consider my 'game of the decade' and that is Mass Effect 2 by a huge margin.
See how easily words can be twisted, haha.

Of course the Mass Effects, I would be lost without them.
KOTOR I and II
The Halos
Half-Lifes (Yes I know HL1 came out in the 90s)
The Metal Gear Solids
Elder Scrolls
Command & Conquer
The Sims series
Black & White 2
The Portals
Fallout
I may have left some out, but these games are just phenominal.

Half Life 2 was an incredible FPS in 2004, on so many levels.

Mass Effect
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Halo 2
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Assassin's Creed II
My favorite games of 2000-2009.
If I include 2010-present, I'd have Fallout: New Vegas, Batman: Arkham City, Far Cry 3 and Assassin's Creed III in there.
Don't like my games? Pound sand.

My personal game of the decade would have to be ME2.
Top five of the last 10 years would be-
1: ME2
2: Halo 3
3: Gears of War 2
4: Forza 3
5: World of Warcraft (up to Cataclysm, stopped playing before MoP came out)

In that context HL2's nomination is more understandable, but still up to debate. Chest-high walls and regenerative HP/shields games galore ahoy!

Mass Effect 2 is right up there though.
