Each has their own best games though. For me:
Knight Of The Old Republic 1 and 2: pretty damn epic.
Dragon Age: Origins: freakin awesome.
Metal Gear Solid: A legend among games I tell you.
ME trilogy: Yes I'm being biased and included all 3 lol But I love ME world, don't wanna leave anything out =)
GTA, or The Elder's Scroll series are just not the games for me. But I can see why they appeal to others.

So Half Life 2 is bad while Half Life 1 was amazing? wat

Trying to explain why HL2 was so important to someone who didn't play it before the sixth generation came out it's kinda like trying to explain The Beatles by today's standards.

All the bars it raised and all the things that made it so revolutionary are taken for granted now.

I guess, if we take influence, market dominance and cultural impact into account, all these games would be dwarfed besides World of Warcraft.

So there would be my vote for 2004-2010

I would say Halo CE. My reasoning is because it set the standard for shooters. Mass Effect probably learned a lot from CE, like many of the other popular shooters we see today on the market. Another that I think would be high up there is Morrowind. The game is enormous and the sheer complexity is something that future RPGs can relate to. I wouldn't say Mass Effect 2 as game of the decade, but the introduction of character imports was revolutionary! However, I do think that older games tend to get bias opinions because of how they set standards, which is kinda unfair to the newer developers.

And how would you declare the game of a decade, for a decade that has yet to conclude, Einstein?

It's really pretty hard, and definitely arbitrary, to compare across years (let alone genres). ME2 is up there, for sure though. Maybe it's the best, it's just so hard to compare disparate genres and years in this way.

My best games of the decade (in no order, see above):

-Mass Effect
-Mass Effect 2
-Halo: Combat Evolved
-KOTOR
-Civilization IV
-Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
-Halo 3
-Gears of War (the original)

I'd say BioWare had a damn good decade to start the new millennium.

Edit: On the subject of Half-Life 2: for me, Halo 2 was vastly superior (both came out in 2004). I played Half-Life 2 when it came out. The game was clunky and boring; it felt like a tech demo for a physics engine wrapped in an engrossing story and atmosphere. They nailed the stuff I tend to like (story and characters) but completely dropped the ball in the gameplay department (brick puzzles, water puzzles, pipe puzzles, jumping puzzles, car-dropping puzzles, first-person vehicle sections [the horror...]).

My top games from the last decade in no particular order:

Suikoden 2 (Came in 2000 in Europe, so I count that in)
Final Fantasy 9
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Shadow of the Colossus
Dragon Quest 8
Mass Effect
Mass Effect 2 (Even with its flaws)
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (This game was just excellent Lovecraftish horror game)
Metal Gear Solid 3 (My favorite of the series, 2 and 4 were a dissapointment)
KOTOR (Game that introduced me to Bioware)
Diablo 2
Warcraft 3
World of Warcraft

Metal Gear Solid 4 is still my favorite game ever. That's how you make a game.

ITT: People who don't know how decades work. Just as the 90s went from 1990-1999, the decade following (the "aughts", if you will) was 2000-2009. 2010, and thus ME2, would be in the current decade, not that one.

Half Life 2 won because it had a big effect on the FPS genre, Mass Effect did not have a big impact on the RPG genre.

There is no CoD, Halo, Crysis without HL2. So HL2 has to be the game of the decade bar none.

Too many good games to chose just one, if I would just name one at the top of my head though, Rome: Total War.

This is all based on the majority of opinion votes. The key word being "opinion".
It's just a pissing contest, so don't get so agitated about guys.

Say what you think the game of the decade is and move along. Debating what game is "better" is extraneous.

As for me I'd have to acknowledge The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim because I'm a sucker for RPGs and sexy dragons that I can double wrap in bacon.

But honestly, there were a good number of great games that released. I enjoyed them for different reasons.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne
Call of Duty: World at War.
Mass Effect 2.

I'd say Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, but I think that is over ten years old at this point. Scratch that, October 2003, that just meets the mark.

Oh look at me! I enjoyed MGS more than ME2, objectively, it means that it's a better game! Hurdi derp di doo.

Is/was the Witcher 2 up there? Imo, that game deserves best-at-almost-everything award xD

But if not, the game of the decade? *looks up Planescape Torment*

DECEMBER 12 1999? Damn! So close ><

MGS stories are written pretty well (except for maybe 4). Read that in Alistair's whiny voice.

Don't think I've ever played Witcher 2, PS2?

San Andreas and CoD4.

ME2 wouldn't be too far away though. Nor would ME1 for that matter.

Hm, there are a lot of fine games in 2000-2009, but if I had to choose then it is good old Warcraft 3. 2nd Place is Spellforce 1, 3rd place is DA:O.
2010-now my favorite is still Skyrim (with mods).

some people just feel rpg with story trumps fps regardless of graphics or gameplay, by nature of concept.
