also, no matter how awesome the game mechanics or how great the quality, some people are prejudiced against Grand Theft Auto because its mise en scene isn't as lofty as the universe of Mass Effect

I would say Bioshock (first one) and/or Fallout NV.
I'm big fan of RPG and play pretty much every rpg-title I can get my hands on, but unfortunately not much excitement from the last ones. May be I'm just getting old.
I would pick ME trilogy as best one for really unique emotional experience it has delivered, but... you know... *whisper* That ending pretty much ruined the whole series for me */whisper*
