first, here's the link - ME will be using Frostbite 3 for next title, not 2 as previously thought

http://www.pcgamer.c...ge-frostbite-3/

Now here's the demo

Honestly, this does not look very next gen to me, and is quite underwhelming. When Crytek, EA, Epic Games, etc. were showing off demos of their coming games in 2005 for next gen, I was quite taken aback, as were most. Killzone 4 even looks better than this, and it seemed like a very small step up from current gen.

Now that we recently found out through an accidental dev tweet that ME will be using this engine, what do you guys think? For me, there is definitely potential, but perhaps we are reaching a plateau in terms of graphical beauty. Thankfully BW games have more focus on story than crappy Call Of Fieldy Modern Battle games...

The best equivalency current gen would be ME1-Gears1.

Thoughts?

Underwhelming, what?

BF4 is already far along, ME4 barely started development. So it probably will look even better.

Besides that, calling this underwhelming if you look at the majority of the current gen titles.. are you joking?

Accidential tweet? BioWare Montreal's Studio Director confirmed it on Twitter. That's barely accidential.

op... just... no. do you know what rendering is right? also in some moments you can count polygons let say on the rock or jeep.

besides single player trailer for a battlefield? battlefield?! some ponies are lost their minds and common sense.

He made a point of saying "Frostbite" to which everyone was reporting Frostbite 2. Another dev let it slip that it was Frostbite 3 this week, to which Yannick Roy (BW MTL SD) replied positively

I think people forget about the limitations of flash player...
It will look better than what you see on youtube. It will be amazing compared to current gen console stuff. Don't expect to drop your jaws if you played BF3 on on a high end PC though.

Just as a side note, the UE3 samaritan tech demo shown at gdc 2011 still looks better, but that's a tech demo and this is gameplay.

You can check out some UE and CryEngine footage form gdc 2013 to put things in perspective.

If you don't care to, the bottom line is Frostbite looks good, but does not blow the competetion out of the water.

I'm starting to think that OP has no clue what they're talking about.

Compared to current generation console games, it definitely looks next-gen.

The difference between games like Crysis 3 and Battlefield 3 on PC and the Frostbite 3 reveal isn't as large as it is between current generation games on console and the Frostbite 3 reveal.

Aside from the stunning visuals, I REALLY love some of the animations.

Its probably not going to be a huge upgrades from what the FrostBite 2 engine can do on a higher end PC, but I think this is a response to the new consoles being released and having a game engine ready for those systems.

As far as being underwhelming compared to other engines, this was a gameplay demo, but I rarely like the tech demos for they are doing stuff that you really never see in game.

I do wonder if they are going to be able to maintain a consistent visual feel with switching game engines.

Going for an internal EA game engine makes sense, you don't need to pay any license fees, but I do hope they work hard to make the game still look and feel like the Mass Effect universe.

In 2013 how are people mistaking an engine for how a game looks?

If I was to humour that however, I'm sorry, but BF4 looks great

You can still expect the pillars the franchise is known for to be fully intact though, including diverse alien races, a huge galaxy to explore, and of course rich, cinematic storytelling.” Hell yes music to my ears. Now i would like to preorder this.

My guess would be money.  Bioware had to pay Epic to use the Unreal engine.  EA has the rights to Frostbite through DICE.  So EA can have any of their studios use Frostbite without having to pay extra.  Its not a bad idea and Frostbite is a nice engine in its own right.

BF4 is still pretty much current gen (or cross gen, PC, PS4 and next Xbox will suffer) so no wonder if it looks almost the same as BF3. It doesn't look anything special but ME4 will most likely be next gen game so visuals should be better. Current gen limits game design in various ways, mostly thanks to the ridiculously low amount of memory.

I honestly doesn't know if OP is trolling or just have a habit of inhaling huge amounts of lighter fluid before posting on BSN, either way. Saying Frostbite 3.0 is underwhelming for the next Mass Effect is just plain stupid, especially when you base it on a gameplay trailer for a completely different game developed by DICE. Hopefully frostbite will bring something refreshing to the ME franchise, like huge environments (just imagine a whole ward on the citadel to explore, rather than the small section we are used to).

If anything It's 10x better than what ME3 was developed on.
I'm seeing far more realistic lighting effects and graphics.
I'm just hoping they don't go for a complete design overhaul because of the switch to a newer engine.
I feel we may see a change with something we are already familiar with and It will get passed off as a retcon...rambling what.
