And, again, I like Aveline, but if you put her next to Isabella or Merrill (as the game often did), she was not the same type of traditionally attractive female. I am not downing her looks, but again... not traditionally attractive. You won't see any Victoria's Secret models with her generalized appearance.

Whereas Mordin is the splitting image of Leonardo di Caprio, right?

You may have missed his last statement where he said he was joking.

Until Bioware includes a classically attractive female companion that you cannot have sex with, then they still have a long way to go to be as progressive and some would claim.
As a disclaimer, I would not consider a 1,000 year old blue, mono-gendered alien without hair but big boobs (Samara) who shuts you down because of a samurai code to be "female" in this case.

What about Kasumi?

No and no for the first two. A half yes for the last one. There was a trailer with female Shepard for ME3, I believe.

The only time they advocated a female character was the whole "WE'VE GOT FEM-SHEP" marketing in ME3, holding online beauty pageants and a trailer which replaced Male-Shep with Fem-Shep.

I think they made one or two female Shepard trailors--I may be wrong. And she was on the CE box with the male Shepard. There was quite a storm about how they chose her, actually.

But I don't think they've done anything female with DA. Might be time for that.

Hmm...DLC character, but then so is Sebastion. Might have a point here.

Are you serious? The other companions don't really change their clothes either. It's due to something called "limited resources".

As others have already said, yes to some extent. Two trailer, some wallpapers and Femshep cover which you can switch on your box. Something that did not make it's way to the PC version. I'm not bitter, but just saying.

so let me get this straight, bioware has never really marketed you can play as a female pc or made a game where the pc is only female?

She's your sister. Bioware will do many things, but I think they'll stay away from incest for the time being.

The fact that I even have to say "For the time being" scares me.

I wasn't refering to actually banging her.

I was refering to what is considered  typically attractive. Of course you shouldn't romance her, but that doesn't mean you can't appreciate the beauty out of character.

DA:O did have origin trailers, and a few of them featured female versions of the warden.  There were also posters that had female wardens, as seen in this gallery:  http://dragonage.bio...allery/posters/

ME1 and ME2 had NO marketing of FemShep, at all.  We were shocked when Chris Priestly put a few screenshots of FemShep online right before ME2 came out, but other than that, there was nothing but the confirmation by devs that she existed as proof that we could choose gender in those games.

If we were to go a little backwards in time, we could count Mission Vao and Juhani as female characters which couldn't be romanced.
Although that's a little tricky... Juhani could be romanced by a female Revan as a bug, but I think they fixed it, can't remember.

I like his comments about Isabela. Yeah, she was sexualized - and it was intentional. Quite right too. I can't even imagine her dressing any other way, to be honest. It suited her character perfectly. The voice actress also did a great job. However, the overly large breasts are a bit excessive and give the impression that Isabela is male eye candy. umm, they don't even look natural...

I installed a mod that gave her black pants and a gray top and kerchief.  I can't imagine her dressing any other way, as she looks like a sexy pirate, rather than a pirate themed hoo...umm, person who forgot to put on pants Posted Image

Dress her up however you like... but the 'no pants' look is not out of place for this character. The boots she wears are basically pants anyway, almost above her thighs. Isabela is a "sexy pirate" who isn't afraid to show it. If she dressed like one of those pirates in old movies I'd probably laugh.

Ah.

Well that's dependent on your character YOU make--if Hawke is fugly, she likely will be too. But if Hawke is nice and handsome or pretty, she'll likely be pretty too.

Her appearance is entirely dependent on your Hawke. So I don't think a judgement can be made there.

And I'm opposed to static outfits for all companions, for several reasons, so yes, I am very serious.  I understand that they were cutting corners, but that excuse doesn't mean we can no longer criticize the decision.  Also, my last few sentences in that post was a joke.  I understand that video games characters have no choice in what they wear.

Varric and Sten aren't exactly traditionally attractive.  Some people might like them, but some people like Aveline.

And Vega is as far away from the standard model of attractive as Aveline is, really.  Dude's as close to being a Krogan as you can be and still be human.  It's just men seem to have a broader definition of attractive.  And FemShep can sleep with him in the latest DLC, even if he's not a romance.

And Sebastian is an LI, even if you can't sleep with him.

Really If you've got about 8 party members, and you want to have a choice of LIs for both genders, then once you've excluded the siblings, golems, dogs, robots and other obvious non-LIs, if you're fairly attractive you're probably going to be drafted for LI duty, whichever gender you are.

Though ME did get away quite successfully with offering the ladies a horrible spiky monster.  If they hadn't Vega probably would have been an LI.

If thats the case, why is Jimmy saying Aveline is not attractive by typical standards?

ROFLMAO The paragraph where the word "privilege" is used about half a dozen times is going to get a reaction from some folks here on the BSN.

What I've found disappointing in BioWare romances--aside from their lack of plot relevance recently--is the fact that female romances tend to have a wide range of characters, from middle-aged veterans to terminally ill and beyond.

While I don't want to generalize all the female characters, they always tend to fall onto the trap of being mid-twenties (or appearing as such) with their romance just being... well, rather plain. We've yet to see a romance which involves a middle-aged woman who had kids, a grizzled war veteran or what say you.

Look at the reaction behind Aveline, people were finally excited for a potential romance that was outside of the mold.

TL;DR - the range of romanceable characters for male players is smaller than the female player.

All the talk of inclusiveness is just fine and dandy. However Bioware still needs to decide on a target audience for Da3. Cater to everyone and you cater to noone.

Assuming you're referring specifically to straight romances, then, yes, I agree.
