Yup. Just as asari aren't female. But that is a different story.

According to the ME lore asari is an all female race.

I'm guessing Volus Warlord believes that 'female' and 'male' only apply to humans.  Which isn't correct - even many plants can be female or male - but hey, who needs a little thing like accuracy?

You're not getting blowback for that suggestion. I hope they do put more attractive people in the game who blow off the PC (like Teagan, that tease) but you argue with everyone who disagrees with your other contentions which really have nothing to do with that point. Whether or not they've done it before (and I do think they have) I'd like to see them do so in the future.

I believe he's referencing that Asari are monogendered. Noted in the ME wiki. But...I'm pretty sure he can speak for himself.

Just once I'd like to stumble across an interview or piece with a member of the Dragon Age team and find out they actually talk about the upcoming Dragon Age game. Too much to ask I guess?

Nope, it's always gotta be them telling us how awesomely progressive they are, and how they are the single bright light in a dark, misogynystic industry. While at the same time having Isabela fight in a thin shirt and thong, with her J-cup cleveage sticking out. Ooohhh, but it's all context, right? All they gotta do it drop the magic 'C' word.

"See, when we do it, it's OK, because we balance out the Pirate skank with the strong female guard captain." Ok thank you for dragging this misogynystic industry foward, appreciate that, can we....i don't know, get some info on the new game? If I recall you guys are video game developers, right? I can keep up with political issues via The Huffington Post, how about things like wave combat, in-game consequences, specializations, cinematics, classes, weaponery? No? Female protaginists on a game cover is the discussion? Ok then.

First, as it's been said many times, mono mean 'one' not 'none' - all Asari are female, hence, monogendered.  Second, he also agreed that Merrill isn't female because she's an elf.  Elves are not monogendered.

I know you are far too sophisticated for me to comprehend, but just because other species(animals, plants, whatevs) have females does not make it sensible to try to bone them.

This seems like 8 pages of people who really aren't talking about what Gaider is even saying in this interview. Gaider is talking about sexism (only male protaganists are marketable) and sexualization of women (all females being seen as sexualized creatures despite it being inappropriate for their characters). Romances are a part of this, sure, but I think the bigger picture is being missed in only talking about them.

I think Dragon Age did pretty well in tackling this issue, while Mass Effect did not. Isabella is sexualized, but on purpose. Most of the other female characters are not. They can be sexy, as Gaider says, but they are not sexualized. Is there room for improvement? Absolutely, and I am glad they are at least aware of the issue and are actively talking about it.

Fine, I'll put EDI to rest.

Regardless of if she is a robot, a ship, or a female, she has a plot roadblock preventing her from romancing Shepherd (Joker). So she is disqualified.

Varric is disqualified.  He has Bianca :P *

Hm, true. So between that, Sten's own alien samurai code, Sebastian being a DLC, Mordin being old...

Sten does not have a samurai code that prevents him from romancing the character. He does not wish to. In party banter, he agrees to have sex with Morrigan, just to shut her up, but she balks.

And you may have noticed that smiley face after the Varric/Bianca comment.

And, all that aside, you still have Vega. So at least one example.

Mono means single. Monogendered = single gendered. In the case of the Asari race the single/mono gender is female.

That's ridiculous, of course he does. Romance is a concept that doesn't even exist in the Qun.

I wasn't aware that the definition of 'female' related to whether or not they're 'boneable'.  Merrill is female.  She's even 'boneable', so I really don't see why you would disqualify her from being female based on her species.

Actually, Sten's thing is more restrictive than Samara. Samara's code doesn't actually forbid romantic involvement, but the Qun does; at least, it forbids sex for non-procreative reasons.

And, all that aside, you still have Vega. So at least one example.

Again, you can in fact have sex with him in Citadel.

I think part of the problem is there aren't really that many people to really "romance" in the game unless you want to start counting shop keepers or just random people you pass by.  Looking at Mass Effect 3 (since the most recent BioWare game for me) You have Joker, EDI, Chambers, Liara, Garrus, Dr. Chakwas, Kaiden/Ashley, Engineer Adams, Engineer Donnelly, Engineer Daniels, Javik, Allers, James, and Cortez.

That gives a total of 14 people that Shepard can talk to on the Normandy, of course like you said DLC characters never matters so remove Javik, but thats still only 13 characters to talk to.  Then you have to remove the hold overs from previous games and then making sure the different groups are covered and you only have a couple of people left to really not romance.  If it was possible to have 20+ fully voiced characters that you deal with on a regular basis I think it would be more realistic to have more that just aren't interested, but since there are so few, but so many people wanting different things its always going to look like there are going to be a lot of people that are interested in Shepard and nobody is obstaining from starting a romance.

@Xilizhra: Where is the text that says sex can only be for pro-creative reasons? I'm curious more than anything. It makes sense - since the Qun is more practical than it is hedonist - but I never had that dialogue.

^ Does anyone disagree with this statement?

EDI disagrees.

Why does she disagree?

She is conventionally attractive but is not romantically available to the pc, or shows interest in Shepard in a romantically way. She even asks Shepard for advice on how to score with Joker.

If I had said that conventionally attractive female companions are always available for PC romance, that would be relevant. Presumably, EDI knows that if you start a sentence with 'in general' that you're not making an absolute statement which can be proven incorrect by providing a single counterexample.

I might be paranoid but i think the interviews, twitter, and blog posts highlighting the subject are a series of calculated moves that are going to be used incase DA:I is negatively criticized by the reviewers, and customers similarly to how some EA statements tried to claim that the backlash against ME3 was about homosexuality.
