I know the order that the books are in, but can I just skip the first one? I've played all the games many, many times, so I know the background of the universe pretty well. So, that being said, is the first book necassary or can I skip it?

None of the books are necessary. You are not missing much by skipping out on the first book, although it does provide a little extra background on some characters introduced either in the games or in other books. I think you can skip it.
